Musical performances jazz up Advisory By Anna Compagno

On Monday, Feb. 26, the Mountain and Tree Houses gathered in the main gym during the advisory period to listen to the Symphonic Band, Jazz A and Advanced Performance Workshop (APW) students perform. Led by band teacher John Mattern, the music department played a variety of different genres of music, from rock to pop to jazz. It featured the diverse talents of the music department, including many instruments such as the guitar, saxophone and drums. The performances captured students’ attention after returning from a week-long break; when the volume died down due to technical difficulties, students clapped along from the bleachers, keeping the musical spirit alive. The performances were a way to mix up the usual classroom-oriented advisory period.

Next Monday, March 5, during the advisory period, the Symphonic Band, Jazz A, and APW will again perform for the other half of the school, the Light and Bridge Houses. The other two houses will continue to have a normal advisory period where there will be free time to complete assignments. Night of Blues, the music department’s next public performance, will take place on March 16 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Corte Madera Recreation Center.
