The Mesa Group Employee Spotlight

Ten Questions

Meet Rick Marion

What do you do in a day?

Each day’s smorgasbord offers some tasty combination of research, analysis, design, troubleshooting, brainstorming, programming, resolving issues, documentation, technical leadership, and interacting with our clients on a variety of levels. There’s never a dull moment!

Who Inspires You?

My wife inspires me. In addition to being a compendium of virtues, she is driven in her pursuit of self-growth and learning. She never wastes a day. Each action has a purpose and goal. Yet within that, and so much more, family remains the top priority. In short, she’s my hero!
Rick and, his wife, Yenyfer

What is the best part of your job?

My favorite moments are those when I get to be creative in developing a solution to a client’s need. Conventional resolutions have their merits and often get the job done effectively, but the occasional outside-the-box resolution keeps things fresh and still saves the day.

What inspires you?

Inspiration comes from a variety of sources but in the end simply knowing and doing the right thing for our customers triumphs over everything else.

What’s the best thing about The Mesa Group?

I get to work for a company that treats its clients with honesty and integrity, where a simple handshake means a lot, and who has supported and encouraged me professionally and personally. The loyalty the company has continually showed me is one of many reasons I’ve been an employee for as many years as I have.

What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?

Travel, spending time in the outdoors, biking, and going to the gym. The best activities, though, are those shared with family.

In five words, or less, what advice do you have for others in your profession?

Care about what you do.

If you could have dinner with one person, alive or dead, who would it be?

I suppose the easiest, and most correct, would be to choose a family member but if I were to truly venture outside the box, I would choose George Carlin. While his delivery was often very rough around the edges, his witticism and insightful commentary were legendary. Ahead of his time, this gifted comedian would make you laugh and, equally importantly, make you think. Many of his routines developed years ago still apply to our culture in general and to recent events. A dinner and conversation with him would be an unforgettable experience!

What is the best vacation you have had?

I’ve been blessed to see many unforgettable places, but Colombia tops my list of favorite destinations. Colombia boasts vibrant cities, an abundance of nature, and has rich traditions. As one of the most naturally diverse countries on Earth there is an endless array of places to see and things to do. I’ve hiked, paraglided, ziplined, hit the beaches, hit the mountains, and enjoyed adventures in small pueblos and big cities. Colombians are some of the warmest people you’ll ever meet and they know how to enjoy life. A good trip not only lets you see and learn about a place, it lets you see yourself through a different filter and learn about yourself. And if the destination is truly special, you will be a better person for having visited it and Colombia has done that for me.
