The Wave Ballina public school Newsletter Term 1 week 6

Principal's Message

Caronavirus Advice.

You may have heard in the news that Epping Boys High was temporarily closed last week due to a student being diagnosed with COVID-19.

The school will resume operations this Monday, 9th March.

The NSW Department of Education and NSW Health are working closely to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff at all public schools is maintained. This work has included identifying close contacts of confirmed cases and communicating directly with them regarding their requirement to self-isolate.

Ballina Public School will continue to keep all parents and carers informed of developments with regard to Caronavirus and any implications for the school and students. Please keep an eye on our Facebook Page and Website for any important information.

Further information is available at the NSW Health website: COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus)

School Expectations

Parents and carers are reminded of our school-wide expectations: to be Safe, Fair Learners.

Ballina Students being Safe, Fair Learners

Our expectations, as in all other NSW Department of Education schools, is that all students can come to school and be safe and supported in their learning each day.

We ask that parents and carers remind all children of this, and that behaviour that falls outside of these expectations will not be accepted, and will lead to consequences for any children involved in unsafe behaviours.

We ask that you read the attached “Behaviour Code for Students” document, provided by the NSW Department of Education, with your child, so that they understand that any behaviours that do not meet these expectations will be dealt with in line with this document.

We thank you for your continued support in educating your children.

Maintenance Work

Maintenance work is continues at our school this week as we work hard to make Ballina Public School a brighter and safer place for learning.

Current works include:

1. Concreting of the space between A block and D Block.

2. Resurfacing of the Basketball Court

3. Interior and Exterior Painting of both the East and West Sides.

I'd like to thank all students and parents and carers for their ongoing patience with any inconvenience caused by these works. It will be worth it when they are finished.

Have a wonderful week of learning.

Stacie Luppi. Principal.

"Tell Them From Me" - Student Survey

Ballina Public School, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

The survey is taken by students in years 4 to 6 and is completely confidential.

The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 9 March and 8 May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by this Friday (13 march 2020) Copies of the form will be sent home today.

A copy of Parent and Carer Frequently Asked Questions is also available at the following link: Tell Them from Me FAQs

SRC Presentation

At Friday's Assembly, a special badge presentation was made to the elected members of our Student Representative Council (SRC).

Membership of the SRC is an important position at our school. Members of the SRC are selected for their responsibility and willingness to represent all students and the school community. The SRC meet regularly to plan and hold important fund raising events for the school such as the school disco and cake stalls. In doing so they learn about holding meetings, committee work and other aspects of civic duty.

Congratulations to our SRC

Debating Workshop

By Ngkarla (5/6C) and Alliera (5/6H)

On Tuesday, 8 students from Year 5 and 6 went up to Alstonville Public School for a debating workshop. Before doing the workshop we didn’t know what debating was about. The workshop was really fun. I got to learn heaps of new things like the rules of debating. At the end of the day we our team had to break into 2 teams and have a debate about a topic. It was so much fun. I know it sounds crazy, but debating got me thinking I should become a lawyer. I would like to thank Mrs Kelly and Mrs Cameron for driving us.

Ngkarla 5/6C

We went to a debating workshop on Tuesday where we learnt about what debating means. We got to act and write about it. We also got to compete against other schools on whose debate was the best. We did a lot of writing in our books of examples and meanings of debating. Our whole group had to come up with a paragraph and choose one person who was going to speak for us. At the end, we had to divide into 2 groups and debate on the topic ‘Should teachers join in school sports with their class’. Once we were done, the other schools had to vote which side from our school was more persuasive to win the challenge.
