WE MADE IT! University of Michigan School of Public Health Graduation 2018

"The work we do in public health calls a certain type of person, with specific pursuits. It calls a person who is restlessly determined to make an impact and driven by their compassion for others."

-Rashid Njai, PhD ’08, Graduation Speaker

On April 26, 2018, the University of Michigan School of Public Health community came together to celebrate the individual achievement of our more than 400 graduates, and the community of support that provided encouragement and resolve when it was needed.

"Though you came from different backgrounds and experiences, you will forever be connected going forward."

-Cathleen M. Connell, PhD, Interim Dean

These graduates join a network of nearly 16,000 alumni working toward a healthier tomorrow.

"Public health doesn’t belong in just one silo, one sphere, or one school. It is instead embedded in the fabric of our university, our community, and our society."

-Rishabh Jain, MPH '18, Student Speaker

Our new graduates come from a remarkable 134 undergraduate universities and colleges throughout the world. Our graduating class includes citizens from 18 different countries.

"Graduates, you imagined a better future, and you chose to start that future here with us. We are so grateful."

-Cathleen M. Connell, PhD, Interim Dean

"What led me to opportunities unimaginable was, in fact, the support of you all, my fellow classmates. You, the future leaders of the field, encouraged me to push back on the countless nos I received and resist the pressure of comfort in conformity."

-Rishabh Jain, MPH '18, Student Speaker

"In this historical moment, I hope we also remember to keep the 'public' in public health. I hope we see public health as inherently political and the political as deeply personal. I hope we contribute equal energy to dismantling social inequalities both outside and within us."

-Elizabeth Mosley, PhD '18, Student Speaker

"I urge you to be grateful for all you’ve accomplished. as well as for those who have supported you along the way."

-Rashid Njai, PhD ’08, Graduation Speaker

"As we close this particular chapter of our lives and venture down new paths, I am so eager to see the ripple effects each of us will have on this world. I know that together we will discover innovative, science-based solutions for challenging and important health issues."

-Elizabeth Mosley, PhD '18, Student Speaker
