20th Anniversary of PA Charter School Law

On Monday, June 19th, please join Collegium in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Charter School Law at an event in Harrisburg, PA. We encourage families to bring their children to this event and show their CCS Cougar Pride by wearing CCS uniform shirts or Cougar Gear.

Collegium exists because Pennsylvania law allows for public school choice. On June 19, 1997, then-Governor Tom Ridge made public school choice the law of the land in PA, and on June 19, 2017, the Pennsylvania Coalition for Public Charter Schools (PCPCS) is recognizing Governor Tom Ridge with a Charter Champion Award at the Main Rotunda at the State Capitol Building.

A photo from 2000 showing Collegium students and then-Govenor Tom Ridge in our original West Chester Borough school building.

The event begins at 1:30pm with the award presentation to Governor Ridge. Additional speakers will follow, including State Representative Jordan Harris, State Representative Mike Turzai, and Collegium Alumni Aadil Malik (Class of 2013). Aadil is representing the PA charter school student and graduate perspective. While most folks attending the rally are eager to hear from Gov. Ridge, we know that the Collegium contingent is going to be there loud and proud to support our graduate, Aadil!

It is recommended that attendees arrive at the State Capitol Building by 12:30pm to allow for sufficient time to pass through security as June is a busy time in the Capitol complex. Collegium administrators attending the event and PCPCS members will be staging outside the Capitol cafeteria at 1:00pm. Please join us there to prepare for a walk to the Rotunda for the 1:30pm event. If you don't make it to the 1:00pm staging, just come to the Main Rotunda by 1:30pm.

  • State Capitol Building Address: 501 N 3rd St, Harrisburg, PA 17120
  • Event Location: Main Rotunda
  • Start Time: 1:30pm
  • End Time: 2:30pm

This is required even if the SFA is not participating in the Summer Meals Program. Collegium is a SFA, but we are not providing summer meals on site. Families can use any of the following methods to locate sites that serve free meals to children during the summer:

  • Call 211
  • Call 1-866-3Hungry
  • Call 1-877-8Hambre
  • Text FOOD to 877877

2017-2018 Dental and Physical Exams

First notices for state-required dental and physical exams will be sent home this week.

If your child will be in 3rd or 7th grade next school year, a dental notice will be provided. If your child will be in the 6th or 11th grade, a physical exam notice will be provided.

Both the dental and physical forms can be downloaded via the links below. Completed forms are due by April 30, 2018.

From the PA Department of Health

Effective August 1, 2017, the PA Department of Health is strengthening school immunization requirements. These changes are intended to further ensure that students are adequately protected against potential outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, students who do not meet the new vaccine requirements within five (5) days of beginning school will not be permitted in school until the vaccine requirements are met.

Highlights of the vaccine requirement changes include:

  • ALL Students: Four doses Four doses of the polio vaccine are now required, with the last dosage administered on or after the fourth birthday and at least six months after the previous dose (previously three doses were required).
  • MCV and Tdap vaccine for all students in 7th through 12th grade.
  • Second MCV for students entering 12th grade.

Students who have not completed the required doses, need additional doses, and the next dose is not medically appropriate, must submit a medical plan within the first five days of school for obtaining the required immunizations or risk exclusion.

Please access the links below to review vaccine requirements.

Use the link below to review the PA Department of Health Immunization Medical Certificate.

It is critical that students meet all vaccine requirements for the start of the 2017-2018 school year. If you have questions about your child’s vaccination record, please consult your physician. Your child's School Nurse is also available to answer any questions you may have.

Lost and Found

Campus-wide Lost and Found bins will be cleaned-out on Friday, June 16th. Items not claimed by Friday, June 16th will be donated to the Uniform Resale Shop or a local charity.

Collegium Employee Spotlight

This Newsletter section highlights one Collegium employee each week and allows families and students to get to know them even more. Since this is our last Newsletter of the 2016-2017 school year and the end of Season 1 of our Employee Spotlight series, we thought it was a good idea to highlight our official school mascot, Carl the Cougar.

Learn more about Carl by viewing his Employee Spotlight video. Be sure to stick around for the outtakes at the end...they are THE BEST!

Character Counts

Grades K-6th Character Development Program: Fairness, Responsibility, Respect, Citizenship, Trustworthiness, and Caring.

  • Eshani Nallu
  • Macie Hartman
  • Madelynn Green
  • Alina Rainey
  • Ciara Ortiz
  • Mikaela (Mika) Vabre

2017-2018 Child Care and Bussing

If your child needs alternative bussing (within your home school district) for child care arrangements during the 2017-2018 school year, please review the following information.

If your home school district is Coatesville, Downingtown, or West Chester and you wish to use an alternative bus to a daycare, babysitter or bus stop besides your home bus stop, complete the CASD, DASD, or WCASD forms below and return via email it to Mrs. Novak by June 16th.

Alternative bus assignments do not carry over from a previous year. A new form must be completed each school year.

If your plans change after June 16th, please forward your bus request as soon as possible. Requests received by Collegium after July 31st may not be processed by the home school district in time for the start of school.

If your home school district is not mentioned and you have questions regarding bus assignments, please email Mrs. Novak.

2017-2018 Enrollment

If your plans for 2017-2018 change and your child will not be attending CCS, please let Mrs. Novak know ASAP.

Please do not rely on the new school to tell us – they often don’t reach out for a records transfer until after our upcoming school year begins.

As you can imagine, planning for students who don’t show up wreaks havoc on Collegium’s planning and budget.

From the CCS Home and School Association (HSA)

Serving in a capacity similar to a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) or Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), our HSA owes its success to the efforts of our many parent, teacher, and staff volunteers!

Annual HSA Read-A-Thon

Our 2nd Annual Summer Read-A-thon underway! We love that the Summer Read-A-Thon continues the academics we are so proud of here at Collegium. The best part of the Read-A-Thon is that 100% of the money collected will be used to benefit great CCS programs for our children.

Simply collect sponsors to support your summer reading, log the minutes you read over the summer, and then return the Read-A-Thon materials (including sponsors' donations) at the beginning on the 2017-2018 school year!

All of the details are found in the Read-A-Thon Info Packet, below.
