CASAS Updates February 2017

February is now upon us and that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. A couple years ago, a survey indicated that only 54% of people planned to celebrate and those that did would spend an average of $131 on their special someone. Personally I’ve never been particularly interested in celebrating the day. After all, in 1929, the St. Valentine Day Massacre occurred. I will also add that shouldn’t we show our love to those special to us every day? I know, my wife hasn’t fallen for this rationalization either. I will yield and celebrate.

Since love could be a general theme for the month, this is also an easy time to reflect on “the most important commandment” given to us by God. Remember Mark 12:30-33?

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Indeed, while we will give gifts or take/make our significant other dinner, we don’t need to do any of this to earn the love that God showed us through sending his son to die for our sins. No burnt offerings, sacrifices, volunteer work, or other good deeds are needed. We simply need to accept the gift of grace. How can we do anything but love God with all our heart, understanding and strength?

So whether you will celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, be sure to continue to love God and your neighbor!
