Importance of Papacy:

The Papacy is important because if you do things right on Earth, in heaven they too will be right. When Jesus told Peter, he said "that all rights on earth will be right on earth".

Defending the Papacy of the Pope

Many don't oppose because this teaching came from Jesus. Many popes used legal and biblical references to quell opposition. New councils were also used to affirm primacy.

“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven. Jesus basically gave Peter the keys to the church and said that all things he puts into order or does will follow him to heaven

Difference Between First Vatican Council and 2nd Vatican Council

The 1st Vatican Council stated that the Pope was exempt from making errors at all when pertaining to Dogmatic issues. The 2nd Vatican Council first worked on the ministry (such as relationship of bishops to pope), then to the pope.
