5th Grade Transition Visit

Future Bobcats Come to Visit Baker!

Welcome to Baker! Barnard, Morse, & Wattles

This week, students from Morse, Barnard, and Wattles visited Baker to experience a day in the life of a 6th grader. They arrived at Baker around 9:45am. Mrs. Kennedy’s 2nd hour class greeted the 5th grade visitors as they got off the bus, doing a clap-in to celebrate their arrival. The 5th graders reported to the cafeteria and were assigned to a color team. This allowed students from different elementary schools to get to know each other. Our counselors presented information and shared a documentary about Baker. The video was made by our Video Tech 2 students.

After the introduction and documentary, the students rotated through three 15 minute activities in the Gym, Cafeteria, and a building tour. In the gym, the students participated in team-building games with Mrs. Morgan and her 6th grade students. In the cafeteria, students participated in a Q and A with current Baker Students. The tour of Baker was lead by Baker Buddies and Mrs. Kennedy’s 3rd hour. The 5th grade students ended their day, having lunch in our cafeteria. It was great seeing our future Bobcats. We enjoyed officially welcoming them to our Baker Family!

Civil War Days

This week, our 8th grade students and staff visited the Troy Historic Village for the annual Civil War Days Field Trip. This was an exciting day where students had the opportunity to participate in engaging historical experiential learning activities. The Civil War Days Field Trip at the Troy Historic Village is a full day American Civil War experience for our 8th grade students. They had the opportunity to learn about President Lincoln and the telegraph, military life for soldiers, and take an in depth look at what life was like during this time period.

During the field trip, students rotated through six stations for presentations from reenactors in full costume. President Lincoln discussed how he used the telegraph to win the war. Students used the text message function on their cell phones to race against an expert telegrapher to see who has the fastest fingers. Surprisingly the telegraph won. Emojis couldn't even compete with the power of Morse Code!

Students had the opportunity to speak with a medical doctor from the time period. He discussed the gritty details of the medicine and weaponry of the Civil War. Students had a first hand look at how wounded soldiers received medical treatment. Students also learned how to participate in a Company Drill, march, handle their rifle as a soldier, and how to move as a single unit in formation. This was an exciting day for our students. They enjoyed participating in these engaging historical experiential learning activities.

Court In Schools

This week, Baker 8th grade students had the opportunity to hear a powerful message about positive social behaviors and the real world effects of breaking the law. Each year, the Honorable Judge Kirsten Nielsen Hartig from Troy's 52nd District - 4th Division Court hears cases at Baker Middle School in front of our 8th grade students.

Judge Kirsten Nielsen Hartig is a Troy resident and committed to being proactive with our students. She is a frequent volunteer at various Troy Schools, an active member and past President of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Troy Community Coalition, and a member of the Troy Community Foundation. We are thankful for Judge Hartig's words of wisdom and commitment to our community!

ALL IN Celebration

The next ALL IN Celebration is May 31st

Are you ALL IN? This is a question that we can ask to our teachers and students. It applies to the dedication that our teachers have to student success and it literally applies to the student's completion of their assignments. ALL IN is a reinforcement program designed to motivate students. The program was started by Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Becker two of our 7th grade teachers. They are truly Game Changers! Since starting the program, it has grown to include several teachers impacting more of our students.

The ALL IN program has proven to be crucial in helping our students set goals and attain academic success by influencing their motivation with extrinsic forces that over time become intrinsic forces through achieving continued success and having fun! We appreciate Oakland Schools & TFEE for providing resources to make this a success! We are interested in inviting our Baker Family parents to participate in the May 31st celebration! Please send your cash money in an envelope clearly marked your child’s name and 8th Grade Party to school no later than March 28th. **Please let us know, included in the envelope, if there are any dietary considerations for your child and your contact information so we can reach out to you. There will be a basket in the office for the envelopes.

This is sure to be a fun party as our graduating 8th graders enjoy their last days at Baker.
