Follow Your Heart The search for your personal legend

Thesis: Paulo Coelho's novelĀ The Alchemist displays the importance of finding your personal legend through perseverance, passion, and confidence, characteristics seen through a boy in a book, the life of a surfer, and the lyrics from a singer.

Detail #1: "But ever since he had been a child, he had wanted to know the world, and this was much more important to him than knowing God and learning about man's sins" (Coelho 10).

Commentary: Iqbal, a little boy in a novel, was a child labor slave. he escaped and was rescued by a liberation front. he told the leader that instead of going home to his parents, he wanted to stay and help free more child labor slaves like him. Iqbal and Santiago both show passion and this helps them find their personal legend.

Detail #2: "As he mused about these things, he realized that he had to choose between thinking of himself as the poor victim of a thief and as an adventurer in quest of his treasure. 'I'm an adventurer, looking for treasure'"(Coelho 45).

Commentary: Just like Santiago, Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer, also persevered through losing her arm and continued to serf living out her personal legend.

Detail #3: "I came to tell you just one thing, I want you to be my wife. I love you" (Coelho 98).

Commentary: In the song Follow Your Arrow it says, "Just follow your arrow wherever it points." This is saying now matter what your arrow, or your personal legend, leads you to do, keep following it. In the alchemist, Santiago finds his love and tells her s, showing self confidence.

Conclusion: With reading the Alchemist, you can learn that perseverance, self confidence, and passion can lead you to finding your personal legend.
