Welcome back to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In August, at the all-breed shows, collies were awarded 23 Group placements and 22 National Owner-handled Series placements.

There were three Group 1 awards – going to the smooth dog, GCHS Cardross Red Dirt Road, under Judge Christopher Neale (Initial breed: Borzois), the smooth bitch, GCHS Jereco's Simply Irresistible under Judge Linda More, (Initial breed: Shelties), and the rough dog, GCH Highcroft St. Germaine Wildfire under Judge Cindy Meyer (Initial breed: German Shepherds).

Group-placing collies total 13 in August

A total of 13 collies recorded placements in August – five roughs and eight smooths. Placements included three Group 1s, three Group 2s, six Group 3s, and 11 Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon nine times compared to 14 for the Smooth Variety.

GCHS Scalloway's Lion Hunter was the dog that placed at the two largest shows for entries of herding dogs where a collie placed – 217 and 214.

Roughs placing in the Herding Group – five: GCH Highcroft St. Germaine Wildfire (D), GCHB Overland By Request (B), GCHS Scalloway's Lion Hunter (D), Cherann's Thunderation (D), GCH Karachristo Moon River Of Strathmoor (D).

GCHS Travler SugarNSpice Witches Do Come Blue was one of eight smooths, and 13 collies overall, to place in the Herding Group in August.

Smooths placing in the Herding Group – eight: GCHS Cardross Red Dirt Road (D), GCHB Creekwood Lochlomun I'Ll Be D'amned (D), GCHS Jereco's Simply Irresistible (B), GCH Chrysalis Wyldrose You Dirty Rat (D), GCHP Bandor's The Wyching Hour (D), GCHB Markos Just-N-Time-4-Showtime, CD, BN, RE, CGC, TKA (D), GCHS Lachki Dream Out Loud, RN (D), GCHS Travler SugarNSpice Witches Do Come Blue (D).

The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 217 – at Greeley Kennel Club, in Greeley, Colorado on August 18. The award was a Group 2 and it went to the rough dog, GCHS Scalloway's Lion Hunter. The Herding Group judge was Beverly Capstick.

National Owner-handled Series

Herding Group judges placed collies 22 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The placements included four Group 1s, two for the Rough Variety and three for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 17 placements and the roughs took five.
