The children of Sierra Leone

“The soul is healed by being with children.”

― Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Every year I have the honour and privilege to travel to some of the world's poorest nations, to help establish sustainable eye care solutions. And every year I return home challenged and encouraged by the human spirit to survive, despite often extreme poverty. This resilience is most evident in the children I meet.

Sierra Leone has had to cope with more than its fair share of troubles in recent years and is still emerging from the catastrophic effects of the Ebola outbreak. Everyone has suffered, not least the children, with many losing parents and suffering ongoing health issues.

But still they smile, games are played and an education is gained. The most common intended career choice when asked? Doctors and nurses. The country is slowly healing itself from the reception class up.
