New Zealand One year in aotearoa

Destination: NZ

Two years ago Kiersten and I (not picturered above, we can't surf) made the conscious decicision to get out and see the world. As trained radiographers we had an in-demand skill set that would allow us to work anywhere in the English speaking world.

Chateau Tongariro

We arrived in Takapuna, Auckland to an Airbnb. Ready explore this exciting new land. We were greeted but a tiny French bulldog named Maisy.

Piha Beach

One of the first places we went was Piha. A rugged west coast beach surrounded by steep, jagged cliffs. This would be the start of my love affair with the rugged west coast.

ROTORUA

Whakawerawera Forest

Rotorua or Rotovegas is the go to destination on the North Island for all things adventure. Mountain biking, Zorbing and Push Karts all call this geothermically active city home.

Sunny days made the NZ autumn absolutely gorgeous!

Redwoods tower above you like giants from aincent history. (Although only about 100 years old)

Walking in NZ is a national pastime. Like rugby, espresso or brunch.

Waikite Valley

Sheep. There are always sheep.

My Love

Abandoned Railway

The bravest of kite surfers make the west coast home .

BAY OF ISLANDS

Whangerei Falls

Driving north for a few hours takes you to the tourist town of Paihia. A stunning inlet where sun baked tourists flock to beaches, dolphins and tiny Kiwi vacation homes - or Baches.

Early morning on the beaches of Waitangi.

RAGLAN

A touristy-yet-not-cheesy town thats organic and unapologetically gluten free. Great surf breaks, off the beaten path shops and a relaxed vibe made Raglan one of my favourite towns on the North Island.

Piha

Things I can't be trusted with include the following: Cheese, Deli Meats, Waterguns.

We were having an all-time sunset when somebody (me) got too close to the water and got postively swamped by a massive wave. Mental note: if no one is out on the rocks, you shouldn't be either.

Sunday walks: Good and good for you.

KARANGAHAKE GORGE

And abandoned mining town turn hike lead use through dark tunnels, steep cliffs and ruins of the once prominent gold mine.

Spooky! Over 1 km long!

MANGAWHAI HEADS

A short day walk among cliffs overlooking ocean. 10/10 must do.

MOUNT KARIOI

Not seen: 2 hours of huffing and puffing to climb this sucker.
Kiersten 27 (f) likes yoga, cooking, dance music and impromptu adventure modelling.

A challenging steep walk up a tiny mountain overlooking Raglan

Of course, those amazing beaches.

GOLD COAST

The tourist capital of Aussie.

We needed to escape the damp Auckland winter so we took a quick flight over to the neighbours for a little beach vacation. Took a long weekend in Australia's Gold Coast

AROUND AUCKLAND

Muriwai

Dinner at Mexico - the go to place for Mexican food.

Muriwai

Murrays Bay Wharf

This was a 5 minute walk from our home. Not bad eh?

Rangitoto Island as seen from Campbell's Bay.

Sometimes when its not cloudy its just a little bit cloudy and then its awesome!

CATHEDRAL COVE

CORMANDEL PENINSULA

WAIPOUA FOREST

Tante Mahouta! Biggest Kauri Tree in NZ!

We drove up the northwest coast of of the north island and found a couple of things. 1) Massive (read: maaaasive) Kauri trees. 17m girth. 2) Beaches that you can drive on.

ROTORUA

A weekend of mountain biking turned a weekend of walking due to one very slippery avocado and one very sharp knife - ouch!

Whakawerawera forest

HAWAII

We met up with Kiersten family on Oahu for a week in the sun and some much needed R & R.

USS Arizona Memorial.

Honolulu

CAPE REINGA

We did a camping trip up to the very top of NZ and ho-lee! What a spot. The Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea and you get to sit high above and take it all in.
