Candace Fleming One School One Author Event

We look forward to learning about the art of writing, reading well crafted books and falling in love with new titles as we prepare for the visit of our guest author, Candace Fleming. We will have a special kick-off whole school assembly on Friday to officially begin preparing for Candace Fleming's visit on March 7th. The Maple Dale PTO purchased books written by Candace Fleming for each classroom. Two books, Katje's Boxes and Papa's Mechanical Fish will be read by every student in the school. On Monday, each book along with an activity guide, will be sent home with a student in our class to read with his or her family. The book is to be returned the following day so it can then be sent home with another student. Our goal is to have each student enjoy both books before or right after Ms. Fleming's visit. Keep an eye out for the book to come home and have fun with your kindergartner and the book!

Send in Valentine's Day Cards

The special day of love is quickly approaching! Valentine cards may be sent to school for delivery any day. Our Valentine mail bags are beautifully decorated and eagerly awaiting to be filled. Thank you to all who sent such special stickers, ribbons and craft foam hearts.

Valentine Volunteers Needed

We can hardly wait for the most loving day of the year when we open cards telling us we are loved! Please join the fun on Valentine's Day as a volunteer to help our students open and read their cards as well as adhere them in a special keepsake booklet. We will begin our celebration at 2:40.

Box Top Collection Day is Friday, February 17. Please send in your truckload of Box Tops to support our school. Thanks!

School Picture Day - Wednesday, February 22

School pictures will be taken on Wednesday, February 22. You may order and prepay ahead for individual portraits. You may also order and prepay for a class photograph. Orders and payments are due on or before February 22. Look for the information from LifeTouch to come home soon.

Field Trip to the Blue Ash Public Library - Monday, February 27

We look forward to celebrating Read Across America Day - the day of Dr. Suess' birth on March 2 - all week long! We will visit the Blue Ash Public library as a kick-off! Look for a permission form to come home soon. Students will need their library cards to check out books. We will need parents to meet us at the library to help students check-out books.

Literacy Learning

We are continuing to learn how to become stronger, smarter and more independent readers as we learn new strategies. This week we learned that as we read more challenging words we have to carefully look at the whole picture to gain understanding and figure out what makes sense. We also learned to activate extra strength word power when there is more text by looking for pop-up words that we know or words that repeat often that we learn to recognize. We also are learning that it is very important to pay attention to our reading to see if it makes sense and to fix our mistakes if it does not.

Writing Workshop

We are learning to write "How-to" books. We have explored several published how-to books and noticed their characteristics. We have noticed these books have numbered steps; tell what you need; tell what you need to do; use the word, you; often say "and then"; and have an ending. There are quite a few intriguing titles by our blossoming authors, including, "How to Love Your Mom and Dad" to "How to Walk on One Leg"!

Also...

  • We are enjoying singing the song, I Love Somebody, to practice pointing to each word and reading the word do
  • We also are practicing reading, from, as we read the book, My Friends, by Gomi.
  • We are still practicing identifying blends as we review the blend chart.
  • We are working on forming all letter case letters with a correct and consistent way. This week we worked on v and x.

We are visually recognizing small quantities by using ten as a benchmark; representing and recognizing quantities using counters, drawings and benchmark arrangements of counters and counting to 100 by ones and tens.
