JIM CROW LAWS

A black male could not offer his hand (to shake hands) with a white male because it implied being socially equal.
Blacks and whites were not supposed to eat together. If they did eat together, whites were to be served first, and some sort of partition was to be placed between them.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION

The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. By 1933, when the Great Depression reached its nadir, some 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country’s banks had failed. Though the relief and reform measures put into place by President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped lessen the worst effects of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the economy would not fully turn around until after 1939, when World War II kicked American industry into high gear. This affected the people in role of thunder because they weren't treated equal and people are trying to buy their land.

These photos all show what happened in the Great Depression. They show how the farms went bad, people went homeless and jobless, and how most stores had to close down.

ABOLISHMENT OF SLAVERY

For African Americans in the South, life after slavery was a world transformed. Gone were the brutalities because Lincoln said this and indignities of slave life, the whippings and sexual assaults, the selling and forcible relocation of family members, the denial of education, wages, legal marriage, homeownership, and more. African Americans celebrated their newfound freedom both privately and in public jubilees.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

LYNCHING

Lynching is an extrajudicial punishment by an informal group. It is most often used to characterise informal public executions by a mob in order to punish an alleged transgressor, or to intimidate a group. It is an extreme form of informal group social control such as charivari, skimmington, riding the rail, and tarring and feathering, but with a drift toward the public spectacle. It relates to Roll Of Thunder because if the black people did something wrong they would get lynched. Like when Mr. Berrys house got burned down. “I betcha I could give y’all an earful ’bout that burnin’ last night.”
