10 Health Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is an incredibly diverse product to have around the home and on the go, with many great health benefits. Many of us are familiar with the soothing and uplifting scent of fresh lavender. I was surprised when I learned some of the other potent healing benefits of this common essential oil.

If you are new to the science of essential oils, here is a bit of information about how they work. In a nutshell, essential oils are concentrated and carefully distilled substances created from the lifeblood of plants. Just like the food you put in your body, you want to be sure that the essential oils you are inhaling, applying to your skin, and taking internally are the VERY best quality.

Young Living essential oils are made from non-genetically modified and fully organic plant sources. The distillation process for these plants includes cold-processing which preserves the natural integrity of these high-quality plants.

What are the most beneficial uses for high-grade lavender oil around the house?

Read the following list, try it at home, and be amazed! Remember, it is the highest quality of oils which are known to produce these results. Other oils are often impure, non-organic, and diluted with a variety of synthetic chemicals and fillers which can interrupt, decrease, and counteract the positive health benefits of these potents substances.

10 Health Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil

1 – Lowering Blood Pressure

Inhalation of lavender essential oil has been shown medically to lower blood pressure and heart rate significantly. It does this by decreasing the autonomic nervous system arousal, or in other words, counteracting stress. Healthy people in a blind study reported feeling more “active, refreshed and relaxed” after lavender inhalation.

2 – Soothes Allergies

Inhaling lavender oil will also alleviate the symptoms of allergies. Simply place one drop of lavender oil on your palm, rub two palms together, and cup your hands in front of your nose. Deeply inhale the aroma into your lungs. Another option is to place a single drop on the outer edge of both nostrils. I have seen my husband’s sneezing and runny nose STOP dead in its tracks with this technique.

3 – Reduces Fever

Because lavender is relaxing and slightly cooling, it can be used to reduce fevers, and it is safe in treating pediatric fevers as well. Simply place in a diffuser for inhalation, as well as apply diluted in coconut oil or another oil to the feet of your feverish kiddo.

4 – Alleviates Headaches

Lavender oil may be applied directly to the temples (one drop neat) to give immediate headache relief. The soothing affects of lavender on the central nervous system help increase blood flow while relaxing tension.

5 – Relieves Anxiety

Much like the lowering of blood pressure works anxiety is soothed by lavender oil’s ability to decrease autonomic nervous system arousal and calm the central nervous system. Inhalation of lavender oil is calming to the brain.

6 – Heals Insomnia

Lavender applied to the soles of the feet at night has a calming and soothing effect on the central nervous system. This aids in sleep – helping both to fall asleep and to continue to have a restful night’s sleep throughout the night. Simply place one drop in your palm and administer to the soles of the feet.

7 – Soothes Rashes & Itching

Lavender is naturally anti-inflammatory and soothing to the skin. Applied to a rash, particularly dermatitis and eczema, lavender works almost instantly to decrease itching, redness, and inflammation.

8 – Promotes Healing of Cuts

Lavender oil is naturally anti-bacterial, and it stops bleeding. This makes it a great item to have on hand for cuts. Apply neat to a cut to promote optimal wound healing, to stop the bleeding, and to cleanse the site well.

9 – Soothes Burns

Minor burns can be greatly alleviated by placing 2 drops of lavender directly on the burn area. Pain, swelling, and redness will show great improvement, and the burn site will heal more rapidly than without it.

10 – Prevents and Heals Stretch-marks

Lavender oil’s healing properties help to prevent and heal stretch marks by toning the quality of the skin. Generously apply coconut oil to the area, then massage 1-2 drops of lavender. Common precaution is to wait to begin this until the 2nd trimester.
