Ilambilole School Hostel for girls Iringa Rural, TANZANIA

PROJECT OVERVIEW:Ilambilole School Hostel for Girls was a collaboration between the NGO’s Lyra in Africa and Ukumbi. There is an on-going and urgent need for hostels that can serve secondary schools in rural Tanzania. Given that girls frequently live at some distance from school, and there are risks associated with these long walks, parents often prefer their daughters stay at the school during the week. This hostel accommodates up to 100 girls, and in its design follows Tanzanian cultural-spatial preferences. The building design features natural ventilation, sustainable materials, and low maintenance. The local community and the municipality contributed to the construction. Ukumbi / Hollmén Reuter Sandman Architects anticipate further projects to provide safe and sustainable environments that support girls’ education.
