Otago Rail Trail Day 1

An early hotel pig out breakfast was an easy justification in preparation for a day on the trail. Then still in darkness we made our way on foot to the bus terminus for an 8am departure to Clyde where we would meet our trusty trail bikes that will service our pedal power requirements for the next 4 day’s!

With forecast rain we were pleasantly surprised with clear skies, although much colder than anticipated.

The trail today was easier enough to follow and we took our time as we had all day to complete the 45km to our destination for the evening in Ophir. So good to be enjoying New Zealand, the scenery so reminds us of Europe, but without a 24hr flight to get there!

Our basic guide book had us keeping an eye out for some of the local attractions, which also included getting a stamp in our trail passport at each of the historic stations along the way...

Well none of this has gone so well. Our passport has collected 2 of 5 stamps to date (one of these was at the starting point where we collected our bikes from) and we have struggled to find any of the local attractions. Jenny marvelled at such misfortune and stated “how could we have possibly missed any of this when there is nothing else out here!”

We finished off the day cooking ourselves in a 40deg spa (lasted no more than 5min) and enjoying a most delicious evening meal!
