Roberta Bondar Public School January/February Newsletter

The Eco-Council has been working hard in January!

On January 25, the Eco-Council sold bird feeders that they made out of recycled water bottles and materials. The bird feeders were a huge success! The council made $98.70 that will go towards funding a water refill station for our school. As a Council, they have raised over $500 dollars for this! The Eco-Council members also conducted a Waste & Recycling audit in January. Our school did well by following the rules and taking their lunch garbage home, however most recycling bins had trash and food waste inside of it. Also, the Eco Council has been working on advertising the Winter Walk Day on February 7. It’s important to leave the car at home and walk to school!

A Poem For You

This is Roberta Bondar, our school. We are cool but in our school, all the students rule. From the students to the teachers to the staff, we can't thank you enough. You guys don't make anything rough. people may call us Grade 4's but we are much more. To all the staff, you make us laugh. We cherish all our memories and we respect you during assemblies. This is our poem to you! We love you! Thank you for everything you do. All of us are Bobcats. We are all part of one family.

Les Trois Petit Cochons

The classes 4A,¾ and 4C have been doing a French play called The Three Little Pigs (Les trois petit cochons). They have been practising with dances, scripts and props. They first practised with the dance from Aim Learning. Then they used the scripts to practise their pronunciation for the play. They made props like houses, pig ears and noses and clothing. There are five characters in the play. There is the Narrator (Le narrateur), Wolf(Le Loup), 1st Little Pig (Le Premier Petit Cochon), 2nd Little Pig (Le Deuxième Petit Cochon) and the 3rd Little Pig (Le Troisième Petit Cochon). They have been working very hard to learn their lines and create an interesting play and hope to be able to present for other classes.

Author Visit: Richard Scrimger

Richard Scrimger is a Canadian author who writes books for children and adults. He has written 14 books since 1996. Some books he has written include Zomboy, Downside Up and one of his most recent, Lucky Jonah. He has made books with other starting or big Canadian authors. Richard (as he likes to be called), came to visit intermediate classes to talk about his books and the process of writing. Did you know the he wrote 1000 pages of “garbage” before he could actually write a good book? The most important thing mentioned was that you have to work hard for what you love. Richard takes months or even YEARS to write his amazing novels. For example, he has spent over four years writing one book. Richard has an AMAZING sense of humour and that is usually portrayed in his books. Judging by the way his books are written he works super hard and most likely works on them the majority of his day. This might be the reason that his books are sold in over a dozen countries. He states that good books come from different emotions, except happiness. He states, that “every good book, needs a problem, and happiness won’t create problems.” The best stories, have complicated emotions. You take the emotion which is the truth, and you add lies to it so it can have more twists and turns for the audience to enjoy. He also says to ‘remember to always introduce new characters and new problems, to keep readers interested.” Overall, it was an amazing experience that taught intermediate students that you can accomplish anything if you work hard enough!

Important changes coming to SafeArrival system in May 2018

The Peel District School Board is currently using the SafeArrival system by Synervoice Technologies. As Synervoice has been sold to West Communications, there will be slight changes to our SafeArrival system and how you will report your child’s absence from school. The phone number to report your child’s absence will stay the same, but there are a few other changes.

Beginning May 14, 2018, all elementary school parents/guardians need to report their child’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our new School Messenger SafeArrival system.

The phone number will stay the same: 1-855-209-6155

Website has changed to: go.schoolmessenger.ca

Download a new app: School Messenger App (from Google or Apple)

(please be sure to delete the old Safe Arrival app after May 11)

Please continue to use our current Synervoice system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The new School Messenger SafeArrival will be live on Monday, May 14, 2018.

Important to note:

The transition to a new company and system will require parents to set up a new account with School Messenger SafeArrival as data will not be transferred from the old system to the new. More information on how and when to set-up your new account will be coming in the next month.

Offence Declaration required for returning volunteers

Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school community. At (insert name of school), we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year.

To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this record check.

Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you can continue volunteering in the next school year. Expect to receive the form in mid-February.

Healthy Body! Healthy Mind!

When we invest in our physical health, will be able to combat stress and anxiety with greater success. This includes being:

• Well-rested

• Well-nourished

• Well-exercised

Some Tips:

Set a Sleep Schedule – Set an alarm to go to bed! Our body likes a regular schedule. Bedtimes and wake times should not vary by more than one hour from one day to the next.

Drink plenty of water - Many of us go through life dehydrated—causing tiredness, low energy, and headaches. It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger, so staying well hydrated will also help us make healthier food choices.

More steps – Step side to side. Start by doing it 10 times per foot. Do this while watching TV, working on your computer or brushing your teeth. Do it with your children to make it fun.
