Shipwreck Shambles Journey Log 9

Big Idea

This week I have been mainly working on my villain sanctuary. My villain of choice was Davy Jones, so as such, I presumed his sanctuary would be a ship. Not just any old boat, or any modern ship, but a vintage pirate ship. As an engineer, I had big ideas for this ship.

The Process

Over the course of 5 days, I completed Davy Jones ship. It was truly a feat. Included in the ship were the Captain's suite, dining hall, 3 levels of crew living spaces, a captive space, and treasure vault. There were also 3 sails which were rolled up.

The Struggles

As with any project, there were definitely some struggles with this ship. First it was extremely large. Part of the ship was under water, so I had to swim in dark water and figure out how to get ride of the water in the base. Another problem I had was thinking too extreme. Since Davy Jones had such a demonic origin concept, I thought it was a good idea to put a pit of lava in the base of the ship to represent hell. That was a bad idea. I ended up burning down 3 days worth of work in 5 minutes. I was upset, but then I just laughed and rebuilt it, which actually didn't take too long. Instead of trying to play with lava again, I turned the space into prisoner cells, and treasure room.

Habit of Mind

Persistence was a big part of this project. Persistence is the ability to sustain interest in and attention to short- and long-term projects. Minecraft is incredibly time consuming, and time is something I do not have to waste. Also I tend to have a short attention span when it comes to projects. Luckily I was able to stay focused and not get too deterred when my ship burned down. I was happy I stayed committed because my ship turned out really well.
