Happy Tails K9 Training and Agility Center offers four levels of AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) classes and tests,

  1. AKC S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility) Puppy program, Is the CGC version for puppies up to 1 year. This is an excellent first step for younger dogs that may need additional training to pass the CGC test. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class and test take place within our training facility.
  2. AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is the basic level of the AKC CGC program. The first requirement is for the human member of the team to sign an AKC CGC Pledge. The second part consists of passing 10 basic steps, to demonstrate that you are a responsible dog owner and your dog is a canine good citizen (walk on a loose leash, sit, down, stay, come, etc.). The basic CGC class and test take place within our training facility.
  3. AKC Community Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) is an advanced level of AKC's Canine Good Citizen program. CGCA tests the dog's skills in real-world natural settings, outside of the training center environment. The CGCA class and test takes place outside of our training facility.
  4. New: AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU) Is the newest advanced level of AKC's Canine Good Citizen program. The CGCU requires the dog demonstrates CGC skills, and beyond, in an urban (city) setting. The CGCU class and test takes place outside of our training facility.
Join our AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Challenge by taking an AKC CGC class and/or test.

Your dog does not have to be AKC registered, or even be a purebred dog to become an AKC Canine Good Citizen. All dog breeds, and ages (over 8 weeks old) are welcome, and encouraged to take an AKC GCG class and/or test. Plus, all dogs passing the basic and higher level tests are given the opportunity to officially add an AKC CGC title to their dog's name.

  • AKC registered dogs can earn an AKC CGC title.
  • Purebred dogs "not" AKC registered can earn an AKC PAL CGC title.
  • Dogs of mixed-breeds can earn an AKC Canine Partners CGC Title
Dogs love to work with you as a team and show off their Canine Good Citizen skills

Happy Tails K9 Training Center encourages you to proudly show your community that you are a responsible dog owner, and that your dog is a proven good citizen:

  • Passing an AKC CGC test is the basis to enter many AKC sanctioned events and to earn additional AKC CGC advanced titles.
  • If you want to continue with advanced training, passing an AKC CGC test is often a requirement.
  • More insurance companies are now giving rate-cuts on homeowners' policies if your dog passed its CGC test (especially if you have a dog on the "canine restricted breed" list).
  • Landlords will often allow renters that have dogs with proof of passing an AKC CGC test; even if they normally do not allow pets.
  • The first steps to participating in Hunt or Field tests, is teamwork between dog and handler, along with basic obedience training. A CGC graduate makes an exceptional hunting dog.
  • AKC CGC graduates saves canine lives. People who train with their dogs ... are more likely to keep their dogs.
  • Every dog deserves to have a family that cares enough to train their canine to be a good citizen.
