Improving Walkability in Mexico City Los Reyes, Mexico city

PROJECT OVERVIEW: Even though the official Walk Score for Mexico City is at 100% (Walkscore, 2019), the city is not very walkable. It is certainly not a walker’s paradise and even less so in the outer, less affluent districts. This is why this project will focus on improving walkability by coloring pedestrian crossings, thus reclaiming parts of the streets and simultaneously boosting community engagement. Residents will be the main implementers of this art project. Also, local media will be involved in order to increase awareness about pedestrian safety and urban development in the metropolis' outskirts.

CATEGORY: Civil Society SETTING: Urban STATUS: Future project

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: By cooperating with local NGOs (ENSAMBLE, which focuses on community engagement, and Los 500 x La Paz), this project will be developed according to the needs and ideas of the community. Neighbors will implement the colorful street crossings, document them, and conduct workshops around them.

PARTNERS: The afore-mentioned NGOs as well as local government, Mexican paint company COMEX, Mexico City's government and media will be partners in this project.
