A Knightly Newsletter November 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

November was packed full of fun for the Knights! Our fifth graders were surprised to get to meet their seventh-grade buddies at a lunch gathering of the U-Knighters. Due to COVID, our fifth graders didn’t have the opportunity to get buddies during their fourth-grade year. Now they have the support of an older Knight! We had the 80’s themed seventh and eighth-grade dance as well as outstanding band and orchestra concerts. Be on the lookout for the wheel orchestra classes to have their concert on December 6th. Lastly, our fourteen Battle of the Books teams faced off to demonstrate their knowledge. Like all of our Knights, they were truly impressive! -Ms. Wilfert

Student Council Update

The Student Council would like to thank everyone for participating in the spirit day! The costumes were awesome and thrilling, and the donations went to a great cause! Once again, the Student Council appreciates your participation!
We kicked off the month with our 7th-8th Grade 80’s Dance! It was a great event hosted by PTO and NJHS. Students had a ton of fun as they enjoyed food, music, and games from the 80s. If you had an opportunity to be there you probably felt like you were back in time. The outfits and the decorations were spot-on. Other than the mass amounts of jeans and hairspray I hear some 80s bands and musical artists made special appearances. So, what’s the next theme going to be?
November was a busy month for our Knights. Our guidance lessons this month focused on the following topics: 4th graders learned about how to communicate with others in an assertive way. They practiced the four ways to be assertive with a partner. Face the person you are talking to, Keep your head and shoulders back, Use a calm firm voice, and Use respectful words The 5th graders started exploring Arizona Career Information System (AzCIS). This is the platform they will use to complete their Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) starting in 5th grade and continuing through junior high and high school. The 6th graders learned about qualities for success and developing employability skills. This lesson is part of their Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP). The 7th graders completed an Interest Profiler and a Career Cluster Inventory to see which careers would fit their interests. They also input their current classes and classes they will be taking next year. This lesson is part of their Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP)-Mrs. Lindsay

Noteworthy Knights

The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. As IB learners, we strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. These students were nominated by their teachers.

Thinkers exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and make reasoned ethical decisions. - Sierra Anderson and Isaac Donoza.

Caring students show empathy, compassion, and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and to the environment.-Noah Watts, Kiya Shoemake, Ellie Jones, Cannon Palacio, Tyson Daily, and Mrs. Heitland.

Principled students act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice, and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups, and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. -Tanner Lewis, Luis Guerrero, and Charlie Santiago.

Communicators understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. -Luis Guerrero

Inquirers develop their natural curiosity, acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research, and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.-Brigham Kydd

On November 10th, our 8th-grade students had an opportunity to experience a day at our sister school, Westwood High School! The goal of this annual trip is to showcase the IB Program, Westwood is the only MPS High School with the IB Program. The IB Seniors served as tour guides and shared tidbits about the program. Our Knights were able to visit different classes including drama, engineering, foreign languages, math, science, and agriculture. Students even got to meet the resident animals! These included several of the competition bunnies and the two emus. The walk around campus was very informational, and everyone came out knowing a lot more about IB and high school. Our Knights found the event to be a learning experience and a fresh change from everyday school life. Our 8th graders were not the only ones that had an opportunity to hang out with the mighty Westood Warriors. Our younger students were busy having fun with Westwood's Robotics during one of Westwood's Academy visits in November.

U-Knighters

In September, we had our first UKnighters lunch event with the 8th and 4th graders. The event was a huge success. This month we held a lunch to connect our 7th graders with our 5th graders. They had a blast!

Have you heard about the Kids Voting Leadership Council? It is a statewide organization that encourages young people to exercise their right to vote. Two of our students, Abbie Deweese and Joey Sandoval, are members of that organization. Congratulations to Abbie who was elected as the Public Relations Director of the organization. Way to go, Abbie! We appreciate Abbie and Joey for representing our school.

Music @MAAS

Our 6th-8th Graders in orchestra and band had concerts this month. On the 16th band showed off their amazing skills playing for parents, children, students, and our principal! A couple of days later, our orchestra groups played on the 18th pouring their skills into songs. With all the songs and the perfect players, both band and orchestra put on amazing performances. A huge thank you to Mrs. White and Mr. Dixon for their guidance and ability to bring out the best musical skills in our students. Make sure to attend our Dec. 6th orchestra concerts for our youngest musicians, our 4th & 5th graders.
Our very own MAAS Band members at RM High School's home game celebration.

2021 MAAS Prospective Parent Night

If you drove past MAAS on Tuesday night you probably saw lots of people and cars in our parking lot. Was it a concert? Nope, it was our Prospective Parent Night. Knights will be thrilled to know that we had an amazing turn-out. Families that were interested in hearing about MAAS and what makes us different from traditional schools were invited to visit. Ms. Wilfert, Dr. Davis, and Mr. Spenser did a fabulous job sharing about Mesa Academy. We had a panel of students and parents that answered questions and represented our school very well. It was a great night! Applications for the 2022-2023 school year are now available on our school website. They are due to the Mesa Academy office by Friday, January 14th. Applications must be submitted by this date to be considered in the initial application review process. All applicants who submit an application after this date will be placed on our waiting list, and will be considered for enrollment in the future should a seat become available. Incomplete applications can not be processed.

Chess Club

Guess what? In November, The Academy’s Chess Club made a comeback! On the 10th, several students showed up early in the morning to attend the first chess club meeting, led by sponsor, Mrs. Daniels. For the first meeting, members learned the basics of chess, including how to set up a chessboard and the rules of the game. They also learned about the roles of the different pieces, which make the game enjoyable. Chess Club meets on Wednesdays before school. There is more exciting news to come, so stay tuned!

Novel Writing Club

November is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo. Authors around the world attempt to write an entire novel in a single month. The club shared methods of overcoming writer's block. Here are some excerpts from our Novel Writing Club authors:

“The only way to fix all her jumbled emotions was to climb, to hike again. Aisling mountain was too far away. Where could she do this? Where could she hike? Then, with sudden certainty, she looked outside her window, glancing with a newfound knowledge at the large, ominous mountain.” - Rivulet Peak, Cosette Sampson

“Fright pounding through her, Alanah tightened her grip on the bow. This person knew her name, and they were getting closer and closer. Within seconds, the person would appear, and Alanah only had half of a moment to attack before they attacked her. Her hands were shaking, and she prayed that when the person stepped into view, she could fire with precision.” - Figuratively Real: Shadow of the North, Book 4, Claire McNamee

“As the mighty engine roared my older sister Amelia Earhart blew me a kiss as she strapped herself into the plane. She is the bravest person in the whole universe! As her plane went flying off into the distance the crowd cheered as loud as stampeding elephants.”- Grace Earhart’s Story, Olivia Merrill

Robotics @MAAS

Our Newsletter Team had an opportunity to learn a lot from Mr. Pond about our Robotics Club. The MAAS Robotics Club competes in the (FLL) First Lego League, an international robotics tournament. Every school year they have a different topic. This year's topic is Cargo Connect. The missions that are on the table are all based on real-world problems that occur in the business of shipping cargo. All four teams are working on their Project, which is a non-robot solution to a cargo problem. The teams imagine a solution and present their imaginary solution to a panel of adult judges. This counts for a third of their overall score. They also work on the Robot Game, programming each robot to accomplish as many missions as they can. “It's very difficult. It doesn't look that way, but it is.”- Mr. Pond.

There is a long history of the First Lego League at Mesa Academy. There have been numerous teams at MAAS. Many of those teams won trophies that can be seen in the cases in the main hallway. Ms. Merlene along with some parents have done some coaching in the past. In 2012, Mr.Pond began coaching a team, his daughter's team. “About four years ago a few kids came to me and asked if I would coach them. We started a ‘robotics club’ with four teams. This year we have those same four teams, with different students and with Ms. Wylie as a co-coach.” - Mr. Pond.

The FLL’s tournament/festival season is from November-June

Battle of The Books

Our official Battle of the Books season has started! The teams are made up of enthusiastic 5th and 6th graders. Did you know that Battle of the Books happens district-wide but Mesa Academy traditionally has the most amount of students participating? Participating in Battle of The Books is a strong tradition at Mesa Academy. One year we had 22 teams! Unbelievable, right?
This year Mesa Academy started with 14 teams and as we move on to the 2nd Battle we are down 2 teams but don't sweat it, Knights, 12 teams are better than no teams! Currently, Team 7 is in the lead. The number of teams can change on January 13th when the teams will battle again in the Media Center @1:15pm. Good luck to all participants and read on Knights!

MAAS TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS FOR NOVEMBER

Ms. Merlene

Imagine a teacher that not only teaches students but allows students to teach her. There is a teacher like that, and fortunately, that teacher works here at Mesa Academy! Ms. Merlene is the 5th and 7th-grade science teacher at Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies. She loves teaching, “I enjoy the intellectual discussions I often have with students…I learn something new almost every day from talking with students”. Currently, Ms. Merlene’s 5th graders are learning about genetics, one of her favorite topics. If she had to teach a different subject, Ms. Merlene would teach math! Sometimes, she has her embarrassing moments in class, “Last week I did a demonstration where I was trying to flip a bottle of hot red water onto a bottle of cold blue water and I spilled it all over the place. It was more embarrassing than funny to me but probable funny to the students”. Ms. Merlene is a spectacular science teacher, and we are so glad to have her at this school!

Ms. Hayward

Bonny Hayward is one of our esteemed science teachers here at the academy. This month, her 6th-grade students are uncovering exciting information about moon phases while 8th graders are learning about dinosaur extinction theory. Students across all grades are preparing their science fair experiments as they will soon begin their actual experimenting. Ms. Hayward’s favorite unit to teach is the 8th grade DNA/Genetics unit. When explaining why, she said, “I love to see their faces when they extract their own DNA.” Ms. Hayward also said that here at Mesa Academy, she loves when inquiring minds are present and students display their true love for learning. Interestingly, a subject that Ms.Hayward would like to teach, other than science, is health and nutrition. She especially enjoys discussing how the human body responds to nutrition during athletic training. During Ms. Hayward's time here, she has had many surprising lab experiences. Once, while her students were doing a lab, a potholder was burning on top of a burner. Then, a student attempted to put out the already existing fire with another potholder. As a result, the other pot holder also caught on fire! We all appreciate our great science teachers and Ms.Hayward is no exception. A special thank you to Ms. Hayward for keeping us updated on all Academy Science Fair information.

Thanksgiving Traditions from our Academy Staff

Read about some Thanksgiving highlights from our very own Academy staff:

Mrs. Hayward kicked off the celebration by having her students share on paper what they are thankful for and then hung the paper on her door so everyone could see. Olivia Merrill shared that this was special and unique because it showed the true meaning of thanksgiving. Ms. Hayward continues her family tradition of The Turkey Trout and Crab Legs!

My family has a peanut butter ham- a recipe from my Great, Great Grandmother. The peanut butter is baked in the last 20 minutes of cooking to make a type of glaze- we have peanut butter ham and play Euchre- the card game.- Mr. Dixon

Since most of my cousins and aunts and uncles live locally, we usually have about 20 of us together for Thanksgiving dinner around 4:00 in the afternoon. It is always a treat to be with so many family members! -Ms. Wilfert

Find items corresponding to one's age to donate to charity, e.g. if you are 12, you donate 12 good condition items. We collect all items to deliver them on Boxing day. -Mrs. Ada

Sra. Boesch enjoys eating pumpkin cheesecake! But before her family festivities, she had her 8th design infographics for a dish they would be cooking for Thanksgiving.

Many of our staff enjoy cooking and baking. Mrs. Kelly enjoys cooking with her sister. Then, everyone goes for a walk after dinner. Sometimes there are even Christmas lights in the neighborhood. Mr. Pond has everyone in his family participate in the cooking activities. They team up for a successful family dinner. He smokes the turkey and makes the gravy from scratch. His wife, Teresa, makes mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. His brother-in-law makes stuffing/dressing. His daughter's godmother bakes a dessert while his daughter and his wife team up to make cranberry dressing. Overall it's a tremendous success. Who wants to join Mr. Pond next Thanksgiving?

Mrs. Wylie and her family like to build LEGO sets over Thanksgiving break, usually ones that have a winter theme. Then they add it to their ever-growing LEGO winter village.

Ms. Muñoz and Mrs. Sandoval seem to also keep the celebration on a more traditional level. The Muñoz family loves to get up early on Thanksgiving day to drink coffee and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade while getting food prepared for cooking. There's always Christmas music playing and Christmas decorations waiting to be hung after dinner. The Sandovals love to cook, bake, and have family and friends over. Sra. Sandoval takes advantage of the family being at Mesa’s Turkey Trout so she can enjoy the Macy’s parade but, her favorite part is Black Friday shopping and watching Christmas movies the whole weekend.
