This excerpt shows George killing Lennie. George and Lennie have been together for a long time. They knew each very well but in the end George betrayed Lennie by killing him. Steinbeck is trying to show the reader that you can't trust any one.

Franklin picked up Tularicito from the side of the road and took care of him of for 11 years. But in the end he let Tularicito get sent away to an asylum where he was mostly to rot away.

Elisa knew she saw her chrysanthemum seed on the ground. Unlike the other stories Elisa was betrayed by some one she did not know. But it hurt just as much because her chrysanthemums were just as important to her as other people.
Greys Anatomy is a modern day example of betrayal. In the tv show Meredith and Derek date for the longest time but eventually Meredith finds out that Derek has a wife. That is obviously Derek is cheating on his wife and betrayed her.
Betrayal is the act of deliberate disloyalty. Many people in their lives have been betrayed. Most of the time it is by some one close to us like our lovers, friends, or family. The result of this is that we are hurt even more because we never think it could be them.
