NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD CARDIFF BAY 4-11 AUGUST 2018

A Guide for Cardiff Parents

Map of the "Maes" - the Eisteddfod "field" - but no mud in sight in Cardiff Bay ...

The Eisteddfod on our doorstep ... no mud ... and it's free!

The National Eisteddfod will be held in and around Cardiff Bay in August this year. The National Eisteddfod is a celebration of our language, culture and life in Wales.

The National Eisteddfod has become a real festival of late, with people enjoying visiting the Eisteddfod *field* to catch up with the latest Welsh bands, artists, while enjoying the food and drink with their friends and family. Unlike the competition-focused Urdd Eisteddfod at Whitsun, the activities here hugely varied and are suitable for people of all ages.

This year, entry to the Eisteddfod *field* will be FREE of charge. Entry usually costs £20 per adult.

You will be able to wander around the Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay with your family from 10am on Saturday 4 August until late on Saturday night 11 August, FREE of charge. There will be hundreds of events and performances free of charge across the Bay.

Here is the perfect opportunity for Cardiff children and young people to be immersed in the Welsh language and culture for a whole week during the summer holidays. Last year the Eisteddfod was 200 miles away in Anglesey - please take advantage of the fact that it's so close!

Parents who are not Welsh speaking are especially welcome at the Eisteddfod, where they will be able to see the huge range of opportunities available to their bilingual children during the week, and in the future. From science to dancing, literature, singing or just wandering around the Bay, there will be something for everyone!

Where will events be held?

Wales Millennium Centre = The Pavilion* is where all musical competitions and ceremonies are held. The Pavilion's activities are televised live on S4C.

Roald Dahl Plass (Oval Basin) = Open Air Stage, with free performances by popular and up and coming artists all week.

The Senedd = Y Lle Celf is an Art Gallery. Assembly Members will be on their summer break, so the Senedd Building will house the winning art exhibits. Entry is free of charge, but security checks will be in force.

Craft in the Bay area = Science and Technology Village, all free of charge.

Craft in the Bay area = Children's Literature Festival, all free of charge.

Craft in the Bay area = Llannerch Gudd, smaller, informal stage hosting literature readings, discussions, LGBT+ events, singing, comedy and more. Free.

Pierhead Building = Shw'mae Caerdydd, focal point for Welsh learners and various events all week. Free.

Norwegian Church = #Encore - Classical Music, also free of charge.

Area around the Norwegian Church = Caffi Maes B will be the home of informal acoustic performances and workshops by contemporary Welsh bands and artists, mainly aimed at a younger audience of teenagers and students. Free!

Area around the Norwegian Church = Ty Gwerin is the home of the Eisteddfod's folk music and dance. One of the Eisteddfod's most popular venues, this yurt encompasses all sorts of folk music and traditions. Free entry here too.

Weston Theatre, WMC = Y Babell Lên*, the ever popular Literature Pavilion is housed this year inside WMC.

WMC = Pentref Drama*, The Drama Village is also housed within WMC.

Dr Who = Maes B*, this hosts gigs for young people.

* A paid armband is required to access the areas noted with an asterisk* but everything else is FREE OF CHARGE!

Gigs for young people will be held at the old Dr Who exhibition
Everything is new in 2018 ...

If you haven't visited the National Eisteddfod before, please don't worry! There will be plenty available to entertain families for days. Translation equipment is available if you want to buy an armband to go into the Pavilion and watch the competitions or ceremonies.

This year, for the first time, entry to the Eisteddfod *field* will be free of charge for all. With stalls and exhibitions and loads of activities, there will be something suitable for visitors of all age.

And with the *field* in Cardiff Bay, in existing buildings, with tarmac everywhere = no Eisteddfod mud either!

The Eisteddfod will also have ...

A Food Village
Over 150 stalls and exhibitions
Street Theatre
An Art Gallery in the Senedd
A huge range of Welsh music in venues across the Bay
Guided Tours at 11am and 2pm every day
Lectures, discussions and more ...
The Norwegian Church hosts free classical concerts and events all week

Event Locations

The area above the Millennium Centre, around Craft in the Bay - this will be the location of the Science Village, the Llannerch Gudd and the Children's Literature Festival

Around Craft in the Bay

Everything is free of charge in the Science and Technology Village!

The Science and Technology Village

This is one of the busiest places on the Maes, promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and as a result, it's very popular with families and young people. Lots of different activities are available in the Science and Technology Village. Visitors of all ages can experience many different scientific fields with specialists from Welsh universities demonstrating their research and expertise. The following activities will be available all day, every day:

  • Visit Cardiff University's research ship and join in their guided walk
  • With the DVLA you will be able to build a racing or diving game using Scratch
  • There will be plenty of Lego to inspire and develop future builders
  • Models of small boats will be ready to sail
  • Have a go at implanting a prosthetic knee or hip
  • Put your civil engineering skills to the test in fun competitions
  • Come and discover the links between chemistry and the sea with the Royal Society of Chemistry
  • Take a tour through a large inflatable bowel
  • Test your health and fitness with Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • and much more!

Children's Literature Festival

The Eisteddfod's Children's Literature Festival will be held in the Craft in the Bay area. There will be plenty of different activities all week.

The Pierhead Area

There will be plenty of activities around the Pierhead and Senedd buildings
The Pierhead building will welcome the Eisteddfod's Welsh learners
Shw'mae Caerdydd?!

This is the former Learners' Tent, which is hosted in the Pierhead building this year. There will be plenty of activities and information for those who are learning Welsh, or would like to learn. This will be the location for the Welsh bookshop Cant a Mil during the Eisteddfod (relocated to the Bay for the week, instead of its usual home at 100 Whitchurch Road). The perfect place if you need any Welsh books, cards or gifts.

Street Theatre

Street theatre performances will be held in and around the Maes all week, and don't forget the nightly Sea Carnival. This colourful procession and majestic water show will be held every night at 10:30pm.

Sinemaes

The Maes's cinema will be showing a variety of films and programmes throughout the week.

Llwyfan y Maes - Open Air Stage

Outside the Millennium Centre, the open air stage in the Oval Basin (Roald Dahl Plass) will be the focus of attention for many Eisteddfod regulars all day and night. The lineup of singers and bands taking part should have something to suit all musical tastes. This area will also house plenty of places to eat. All performances free of charge.

Norwegian Church area

Around the Norwegian Church you will be able to find Caffi Maes B (youth café and chill out area), Bar Syched, Ty Gwerin (folk music tent), #Encore classical performances and the Ysgol Bro Edern stand!

Near the Norwegian Church you will be able to relax and enjoy in the Ty Gwerin (Folk Tent). Artists old and new will perform here all week. All performances are free of charge.

In the Norwegian Church itself, the #Encore performances will showcase classical music. Also free of charge.

Ysgol Bro Edern's stand will also be close to the Norwegian Church - come over for a drink and a chat!

Meini'r Maes

We will be hiding special pebbles, which have been decorated by our pupils, around the Bay during the week. Return the photos to our stall, or take photos of them and tag @BroEdern on Twitter or Instagram.
