Beechwood High School A Guide to RE-Opening

First and foremost, thank you to all the families who have entrusted us with adapting to the 2020-2021 school landscape. We appreciate your patience and support. Please consider that this Return to School plan is subject to change and may be adapted as we receive new information from the state, the governor, CDC, health department, etc. As we will remain flexible during this time, we will be asking the same from all our stakeholders.

This Beechwood High School plan is in accordance with the "Return to School" plan approved by the Board of Education on July 27th, 2020.

We are Beechwood.

NEW HS Start/End TIME (will occur when students return to in-person)

8:15 - 3:15

The high school will be on a staggered start and release time that is different from the elementary.

The high school will start school at 8:15 a.m. and dismiss from school at 3:15 p.m. This will allow for an extended arrival time for district students, allow more time for health staff to manage a.m. temperature procedures, and a more distanced dismissal procedure.

Doors for HS will not open until 7:45 a.m. (This is 30 minutes prior to the start of school.) We encourage those families with elementary AND high school students to drop off between 7:45 - 8:00 am.

Those who need to come earlier may contact administration and will be able to go to the gymnasium from 7:30-7:45.

Leveled system to in-person instruction:

We have developed a system of in-person instruction that will occur. In working with the state and local Health Departments, Beechwood High School will implement 1 of 4 levels of instruction based on up to date Covid-19 information. These levels are sequential, and more restrictive as you work up. Please read through these levels carefully.

  • LEVEL 1 - 5-Day School Schedule (100% of the students in-person, at school, 5 days per week)
  • LEVEL 2 - A/B School Schedule (50% of the students in-person, at school on select days)
  • LEVEL 3 - A/B/C School Schedule (1/3 of the students in-person, at school on select days)
  • LEVEL 4 - NTI School Schedule (all students at home receiving Beechwood teacher instruction online, 5 days per week)

BHS will communicate which level is active via Infinite Campus email. Due to the fluidity of the pandemic, this will also remain fluid. State and local Health Departments will provide guidance on when it is necessary to move to a different instructional level.

As a point of concern, we will look to adjust or "flip" the A/B/C student schedules at the quarter or semester - so that A/B/C students will have a more balanced experience with their in person days assigned. We will do this at the quarter or semester in order to be consistent for some period of time, instead of changing frequently.

The Beechwood Board of Education voted on July 27th to start the school year in Level 2. But, based on the announcement from the Governor on August 10th - we will start school in Level 4.

LEVEL 1: 5-Day Schedule (100%)

  1. In-person at Beechwood - 5 days per week, as normal, following all social distancing guidelines, where feasible.
  2. Modified (Select students) - Half day virtual curriculum (APEX, NKU, Gateway) and a half day in-person at Beechwood. This will be handled case-by-case, where feasible. We know that some schedules may be affected by the courses students are taking. The hybrid model would still apply 5 days per week. THIS WILL BE DEALT WITH CASE BY CASE - if it works with the student's schedule.
  3. Virtual Curriculum - at home, with the APEX curriculum. (Juniors and Seniors may have the option of taking an online NKU, Gateway, Thomas More course, where feasible.) The opt-out model would still apply 5 days per week and students would still remain enrolled and earn credits from Beechwood.

APEX is a program paid for by Beechwood High School - APEX is our current online learning platform that we have used for several years. This program allows students to learn at their own pace using an approved curriculum for grades 7- 12. This program will be supervised by our counselors and virtual learning lab instructor. These courses will not have a Beechwood teacher to assist in the learning. Students and parents should understand that this program is self-guided and will require a high level of independence and structure from within the household.

Dual credit courses are offered ONLY to Juniors and Seniors and costs will be offset by the Beechwood Board of Education for the 2020 -2021 school year --NKU/Gateway/Thomas More will be offering a variety of online courses that can be completed from home or at Beechwood. The deadline to sign up for NKU, Gateway, and Thomas More is July 28th. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to your counselor to see if it can work for your schedule! An email was already sent via IC to all Juniors and Seniors with more details.

Students who choose virtual curriculum full time may come back to school at the beginning of the 2nd quarter if they feel it does not meet their needs.

Students enrolled in dual credit that have chosen the "opt-out"/at-home full time virtual option will stay enrolled in those courses for the entirety of the semester, even if they choose to come back to Beechwood at the start of the 2nd quarter. They will be able to complete their dual credit courses on campus.

LEVEL 2: A/B Hybrid (50%)

  1. In-person: Two days per week at Beechwood, one day per week at home on live Google Meets following normal class meeting times, and two days per week at home receiving NTI via Google Classroom (details below).
  2. Modified (Select students) - Half day virtual curriculum (APEX, NKU, Gateway) and a half day in-person at Beechwood. This will be handled case-by-case, where feasible. We know that some schedules may be affected by the courses students are taking. The hybrid model would still apply 2 days per week. THIS WILL BE DEALT WITH CASE BY CASE - if it works with the students schedule.
  3. Virtual Curriculum- at home, with the APEX curriculum (Juniors and Seniors may have the option of taking an online NKU, Gateway, Thomas More course, where feasible).

Students who choose virtual curriculum may come back to school at the beginning of the 2nd quarter if they feel it does not meet their needs.

LEVEL 4 : Full NTI School Schedule

All students will REMOTE LEARN in a live Google Meets and Google Classroom session with each class.

The instruction would be continued by their Beechwood teacher through Google Meets, according to the daily schedule below.

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, students will have a Google Meets session with each teacher as a live class session. Attendance will be mandatory in these live sessions and documented in Infinite Campus.

On Wednesdays, students will complete assignments, projects, and collaborate via Google Classroom but will not have live classes for all 7 periods. Teachers will have office hours available on Wednesdays. These may be virtual or in-person. Teachers will post their office hours in Google Classroom.

On the four days that we follow the 7 period schedule, the class length will vary based on the lesson. Teachers will incorporate some time and activities that allow students to step away from the computer. Teachers will be available for the entire class period, even if the lesson does not take the entire period.

Students' attendance in the live Google Meets sessions will be mandatory. Teachers will provide a variety of instruction, assignments, and projects while students are at home. This will look different than NTI last year, since students will be required to participate in live Google Meets sessions 4 days per week with all of their teachers. 8:15 am - 3:15 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Parents should not need to assist students with their work in this model. Teachers will provide all instruction and support. We would ask that parents make sure students are logging in and attending Google Meets sessions (the same way we would expect our parents to make sure their child is at school each day).

For Levels 2 and 3: In conjunction with Beechwood Elementary, we will consider students for a 5-day option regarding economic, academic, or essential worker need. Please contact the HS Administration if you are interested in a 5-day option for your high school student. justin.kaiser@beechwood.kyschools.us

Students who choose virtual curriculum at home full time.

Students and families will need to understand some key components to this choice:

  • This is not homeschooling. Students would still earn credits through Beechwood High School.
  • If you would like to home school, then you would need to contact the HS Office to withdraw.
  • If chosen, the student will remain at home for at least the 1st quarter. This would allow the school to plan schedules and maintain classroom numbers and teacher assignments for a set grading period.
  • If a student chooses to come back for the 2nd quarter, they will begin the first day of 2nd quarter.
  • The online curriculum (provided by APEX, NKU, Gateway, etc.) will be completely self-guided by the student and supported by the parent. Our Beechwood teachers will not be able to support the online learning programs. They will be planning and supporting the in person/virtual learning of students enrolled in their classes.
  • If a student chooses a college dual credit course and wants to come back to Beechwood, then they would remain enrolled in the college class for the remainder of the semester and complete their work at Beechwood.
  • The administration of the APEX curriculum, passwords, logins, grade reporting, and work completion reports will be provided by our Virtual Learning Lab coordinator at Beechwood. This coordinator will be able to provide non-instructional support, monitor the progress of students on APEX, and will provide communication to parents on the status of their child's progress.
  • The Virtual Learning Lab is a new classroom that will provide non-instructional technical support to students who are online learning. This is a new position and classroom for the 2020-2021 school year.

Arrival to School

7:45 a.m. - Beechwood High School doors will open and students will be allowed into the building for arrival. We will have 3 entrances to the high school:

  1. HS Main entrance
  2. Rear door entry at top of the ramp by Mrs. Sletto's (Door 17)
  3. Garden-level rear entry by the band room (Door 23)

Students who choose to have breakfast at Beechwood will pick up a grab and go meal in the cafe and take it to their 1st period classrooms.

High School students that need to arrive prior to 7:45 should contact the high school administration for permission to come into the building early.

Temperature Checks

We will ask that all families perform a self-screening prior to coming to school each morning. The symptoms and items to look for have been communicated by our nurse's office.

  • Each arrival door will have a team of staff to help coordinate a smooth and orderly arrival.
  • All students are screened with a non-contact thermometer upon entry into their first class.
  • Students who are below the threshold of 100.0F will stay in their 1st period classrooms.
  • Teachers will document temperature screenings through 1st hour attendance in Infinite Campus.
  • Students who are at or above 100.0F will be discreetly directed to our designated health unit to be screened by our school health staff.
  • Parents will be notified to promptly pick up their child.

Parents should report any COVID-19 concerns, positive tests, and/or exposures to Beechwood High School Administration.

Flexibility is key.

Masks

All students will be expected to wear masks.

If a student does not bring a mask to school, they will be provided one at any of our entry points. The staff will log any provided masks and parents will be notified when a child has received a school-provided mask. We have enough masks to provide each student two back-up masks, if needed. Please make sure your child brings a mask everyday!

Reusable masks will need to be washed frequently to make sure they are sanitary.

We are requiring masks to be worn at all times - UNLESS mask breaks and mask removal are permitted by a staff member when social distancing can be achieved. We have arranged classrooms to maximize space and increase opportunities for students to be socially distanced.

All staff will wear face masks as determined by guidelines.

All students will wear masks when using district transportation.

Students who choose not to follow mask expectations (beyond medical waiver) will be held accountable to the Student Code of Conduct.

Lunch

Lunch procedures will allow for all students to maintain social distance in order to eat with a mask off.

We have designed a schedule for lunch that will allow for cleaning in between each rotation. The lunch will be a steady stream of students during 5th period. Students will be required to sit at assigned seats in designated areas to allow for disinfecting between groups.

  • Procedure:
  • 2 classrooms will be called out of class and proceed to the cafeteria.
  • Students who pack will go directly to their designated area.
  • Students who purchase will be in the cafe line at 6 ft apart and once through the line, will travel to their designated area.
  • There will be no self-service in the cafe lines. Staff will be serving all food.
  • Social distancing protocols will be followed during the entire process.
  • Once students are seated, they will be eating their food with social distance in the cafe/commons areas.
  • Once the first 2 classrooms are finished, their designated areas will be disinfected, and two more classrooms will be called down.
  • This continuous stream will be implemented until all students are able to eat.
  • Masks will be worn at all times during this process, except when students are seated, eating.

Transitions

Students will follow a schedule that will allow them to travel to each of their teachers.

Student transition times will first depend on the type of schedule we choose (5-Day, A/B, or A/B/C). Regardless, we will follow these procedures when transitioning students from class to class.

One-way traffic flow - students will be traveling in one direction in our main hallways (300 and 400 halls). Where traffic flow requires two-way traffic, our students will following markings/signage on the floors to maintain distancing and order.

Masks will be required for all students during transitions.

Restrooms - Students will be required to wear a mask in the restroom. Restrooms will be disinfected frequently and signage will be posted about washing hands, etc.

Water Fountains - Water fountains will be closed. Water filling stations will be open. We are asking that students bring a water bottle with them to school.

Lockers - We are asking that students minimize their stops at a locker. If they need to access their locker during the school day, then they will have to follow the one-way procedures in the hallway traffic flow.

Windows and doors for all classrooms may be opened during transitions to allow for air flow and circulation.

Flexible Classrooms

We will allow teachers to conduct outdoor classrooms to reduce mask time when weather permits. This will allow for classes to spread out and take mask breaks. Teachers will be able to sign up for these designated spots via Google Forms.

Exceptional Students

Students with IEP's, 504's, etc.

Our Special Education department will be working diligently to provide a schedule and supports that will meet the needs of all students with IEP's and 504's. We have a first class team of collaborative teachers and instructional assistants that will work creatively to support all students.

Students in Gifted and Talented

Our G/T team will work with teachers and administration to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate and grow their specifics talents. This will be a transition, but we feel our team can work creatively to enrich students in this program.

Social-Emotional Learning

Students will receive social-emotional support through a variety of ways depending on the schedule. We will introduce creative ways to implement social-emotional learning through our 2nd Step program and our counseling team will be able to provide continued support to individual students. Each schedule will provide the opportunity to meet the needs of our students.

WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER

Cleaning Procedures

Each teacher will be trained on how to properly disinfect their classroom between each class. Each student will be trained in these procedures as well.

Each Period: All desks will be spray disinfected. Students will then be provided a paper towel to wipe down their own space/desk prior to dismissing from the classroom. They will take their used paper towel and throw it in the trash on the way out the door. Trash cans will be emptied and disposed of regularly.

Each Afternoon/Evening: Beechwood Maintenance will have a rigorous cleaning protocol that they will follow to ensure that all classrooms, spaces, and common areas are cleaned.

Students and staff will be provided with training on washing hands, social distancing, and mask wearing throughout the school year.

Dismissal from School

The end of the school day will now be a proposed 3:15 pm to allow for spacing, etc. with the elementary school.

Classrooms will be released at 3:15 by section to minimize traffic at the HS main entrance/exit. All students who walk, ride, or drive will be dismissed by class. We will have a schedule for each teacher and their time they are to dismiss their class.

Students who get picked up by a parent/family member must wait outside or in their classroom until their parent/family member arrives. Students are not permitted to wait in the halls or lobbies.

Masks are required for dismissal until they exit the building.

WE DON'T HAVE ALL THE SOLUTIONS, BUT WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO SOLVE MOST

Extracurricular Participation

Beechwood High School will follow the policy set forth by the SBDM Council and the Student Parent Handbook regarding extracurricular participation.

However, due to the current situation, students who choose a modified schedule, full day schedule, or are offsite for virtual instruction will be permitted to participate.

Students who choose to be home-schooled will not be able to participate.

School visitors and students arriving outside of normal arrival times

All visitors and students arriving late will be required to enter through the High School main entrance only.

  • We will limit the amount of visitors in the building this year.
  • All visitors will be required to wear a mask prior to entering building.
  • All visitors and students entering the building will have a required temperature check administered by the high school office staff.
  • ID checks and badges will continue to be administered.
  • Parents will not be permitted to drop off lunches this year.
  • The high school office will have a sanitizing station and plexiglass barrier set up to protect the shared space.
PATIENCE, FLEXIBILITY, GRACE, AND UNDERSTANDING FROM ALL STAKEHOLDERS

Questions of Concern

What support will a high school student receive at home while ill/quarantine?

Covid Response Tree is being revised due to changes in the CDC/NKYHD guidelines. This doc will continue to evolve.

Any student who is absent or quarantined may have the option to "tune-in" for 1 - 14 days of absence. This will allow students to gather missed work via Google Classroom and also have the ability to watch the direct instruction going on in the classroom. This live stream will only show the front of the room and the teacher instruction. Some teachers may offer this to their students. Some may offer full support via google classroom.
