Snapshot 26 january 2017

Dear Friends

In my time away I was seriously challenged by two passages. As a pastor/preacher of a community of faith and a spiritual director in this community these passages have real relevance to my life.

The first is Luke 6:40

Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.

The simple challenge from this passage is this: If I am a teacher/mentor and students become like their teacher, who will people who follow my teachings or example become?

The second is Ecclesiastes 12:9 - 10

The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them. The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly.

With the stakes so high, I must to do everything in my power to understand the word of God that I love so much. Added to this I should spend more time making sure that I communicate in the best possible way so that people will clearly understand what is being said.

Jarring thoughts for anyone who aspires to being a teacher or leader.

Abba's Pride Kids Camp 2017

All the campers and leaders

2017 started with a first ever for Abba's Pride! We hosted a Kids' Camp for over 70 students from 4 of our partnering churches. The camp was held at Camp Zenith in Heidelberg. Volunteers from the USA and South Africa travelled to the camp on Sunday afternoon and prepared for the exciting week ahead.

Students and their leaders arrived on their buses on Monday afternoon and the madness began! Throughout the week the students participated in various activities and games including drama, soccer, dance, swimming, basketball and art. The favourite of almost all of the students was swimming because many of them never get a chance to swim in a pool! The most important part of the week though was the time spent worshiping Jesus through song, hearing the Gospel of Jesus and spending time talking about it in small groups.

The theme for the week was "God's Love Knows No Limits" from I Corinthians 13:7-8 which says

"Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen."

By the end of the week we had at least 10 students who accepted Christ for the first time and many more who rededicated their lives to Him.

Thank you so much to all of the Eastsiders who came out and helped make camp so amazing! And thank you to the many other Eastsiders who helped make it happen by giving financially! We couldn't have done it without all of you!!

Evening Services are BACK!

This past Sunday night our venue was buzzing with old and new faces as we held our first evening service of 2017. We have been praying that God would do something very special during the evening services this year and if Sunday night was anything to go by, we are in for an amazing year! The Holy Spirit moved in a powerful way during worship and we were truly blessed with God's presence. Mark spoke on Gideon's call to lead the battle in Judges 7, focusing on the three types of people that were in Gideon's army: The fearful warriors, the distracted warriors and the committed warriors. After the message, many of those present joined Mark at the front of the church and made a commitment to be one of the 300! Many have taken the image below and saved it as their phone wallpaper as a reminder of their commitment.

Then, to end off the evening everyone enjoyed a great time together over a boerie braai.

This coming Sunday we will be praying specifically for students. If you know a student who does not attend church, invite them to join us for the service. A simple "Hey, Eastside is going to be praying for students to have a successful year, and for peace at the university, and there will be free pancakes too" Whatsapp might be all it takes to get them connected to Jesus.

Be brave! Be bold! Be one of the #Eastside300
