The family behind Healthy Harvest

Why #KnowYourGrower?

More and more consumers are turning to EVOO for its long list of health benefits. Yet in 2010, a study by the University of California-Davis found that 86% of extra virgin olive oils they tested did not meet the standards to receive the "extra virgin" grade. The oils were either old, damaged, or adulterated with cheaper, refined oils. Another pitfall when buying olive oil is relying on the country of origin printed on the label. Companies are required to list the oil's source, but oftentimes the label says "Made in Italy" even if it was just bottled there and made in other countries.

So, What is "Extra Virgin?"

The term “extra virgin” refers to the finest grade of olive oil made from the first cold press of olives. Olive Oil Times states “it is the only cooking oil that is made without the use of chemicals and industrial refining. It’s simply the juice of fresh, healthy olives which contains, more than any other grade, the health-promoting nutrients that olive oil is famous for." Even if the oil was originally extra-virgin, poor storage can degrade the quality. That is why you’ll notice Healthy Harvest olive oil NEVER comes in plastic or clear containers.

Olive Oil You Can Trust

We have longstanding personal relationships with each of our growers and have visited the farms to see their production methods. We also send samples of our oils to an independent lab in California to be tested for purity and quality.

We recently returned from a 174-year-old estate in Tuscany, Italy that has been producing smooth, peppery, high-antioxidant oil for four generations.

The Growers

The Mari family has noble origins at the Carmignano Castle as a founding family of the Tuscan region. Lorenzo Mari (1766-1824) was a cavalry officer who lead the 1799 anti-French insurrection known as "Viva Maria"; Adriano Mari (1813-1877) was a famous lawyer, Minister of Justice, a Senator and President of the Camera when Florence was capital; Marino Mari (1890-1944), was one of the Florentine leaders against fascism. During the 1930's he was forced to leave active politics and therefore dedicated himself to innovation in agriculture. Now, at 83 years old, Lorenzo's great-grandson, Dr. Marino Mari II, tends the land.

The Oil

Our True Tuscan extra virgin olive oil is a 50/50 blend of the prestigious Frantoio and Moraiolo varietals. The Frantoio olive is the only varietal native to the Tuscan region, while the Moraiolo is known for its high antioxidant content. The olives are cold-pressed within an hour of picking on an ancient stone wheel, a method which has been used for centuries. Only two still remain in use in the region. The result is an aromatic bright green oil with an exceptionally smooth texture and strong, peppery flavor. It is exceptionally high in polyphenols, the antioxidants that give EVOO its health benefits.
