The book The glass castle recounts the unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing Walls and her siblings had at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents.

The book was banned from many schools and even some libraries due to the strong sexual scenes and situations dealing with alcoholism and abuse. The book was banned in some school districts in California, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. From 2010 -2016. In 2012 the book was ranked #9 in the most banned books.
