How is it transmitted?
Lice is spread through personal contact or contact with infested clothing or other personal items.
Who's most at risk?
Children at schools or day care facilities are at highest risk but all humans can be exposed to lice
Symptoms of Lice
Continuous itching and skin bumps are common symptoms
Damage caused by lice
Lice rarely causes direct harm. Thus, they should not be considered a medical or a public health problem.
Common location of lice
Lice is commonly found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near the neckline behind the head.
Prevention and Treatment
- Don’t share items that touch the head like combs or towels.
- Avoid activities that lead to head-to-head contact.
- Keep belongings, especially upper body clothing, away from shared areas like coat closets.
- Treating infestation requires using Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications.
