Designing a Website (Peer-to-Peer learning experience)

Test Owl is a website that is an online platform for standardized test takers to share their exam study resources. The website aims to provide test takers the opportunity to get discrete learning products created by their peers for standardized tests that include personalized notes, test preparation plans, worksheets, quizzes tutorial videos etc. In addition to allowing students to find relevant content, this website will provide users with the platform to share content that was previously underutilized.

There is significant number of standardized tests that are a part of American education. For Phase 1 of my website’s design and user experience planning, I shall be focusing on GMAT and resources that are shared for free by applicants who have taken the test.

Research

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a 3½-hour standardized exam designed to predict how test takers will perform academically in MBA (Masters in Business Administration) programs.

The follow summary report highlights findings from the ‘2016 mba.com Prospective Students Survey’, which represent responses from more than 10,000 prospective business school students who registered on mba.com, the portal to the GMAT exam, between October 2014 and September 2015 and highlights from ‘Profile of GMAT testing: Citizenship Report – Five year summary, 2011 -2015’

  • Average GMAT Score in United States: 568
  • GMAT to Attend MBA in United States: 172,839 applicants
  • GMAT to Attend Masters in United States: 41,298 applicants
  • GMAT to Attend Doctoral/Other programs in United States: 4370 applicants

The above survey clearly shows that search for new job is the key trigger for pursuing graduate management education. Motivations of prospective applicants vary depending on program preferences. No matter what first leads individuals to consider a graduate business degree, they have similar goals:

  • Develop general business knowledge and managerial and leadership skills;
  • Increase their earnings potential;
  • Receive more challenging projects at work;
  • Have access to more career opportunities; and
  • Gain a personal sense of accomplishment and achievement.

An understanding of this information will allow me to identify and define target audience for my website and customize services to complement their requirements. Moreover, an understanding of how users will choose and compare products will help me structure and prioritize content on my site by focusing on relevant end-benefits. The color combination and look and feel of the website will also play a significant role in grabbing attention of the target audience.
