Sole Survivor PRESS KIT

"America's backyard has been the playground for perpetrators to abuse and assault women and children. I am sickened by the constant news headlines that fill our local and national news with the sexual abuse that takes place in our society." said Holly K. Dunn

Conversations with "Sole Survivor" Holly K. Dunn

"As students who study Criminology, it is particularly difficult to conceptualize the events and topics we study at arm's length. We are so excited Holly agreed to come in and share her experience as not only an educational tool but also as a lesson in strength, resilience and turning a horrific experience into an opportunity to give back." --Brittany Miraldi, President Penn State Justice Association

Holly K. Dunn joined Pamlico Rose Institute for Sustainable Communities and Washington, NC at the historic Turnage Theatre for an hour-long discussion on her book Sole Survivor and the process of healing from sexual assault and intimate partner violence.

“Make decisions that keep things like this from happening,” Dunn said. “I’m a big believer in self-defense.”
As our nation remembers the victims of sexual assault this April 2018 for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I am asking our communities, our neighbors, our families, our leaders at the federal, state and local level to recognize the killer next door, sexual assault trauma.
I deal with trauma in Veterans all the time. When I look for examples of how people turn Post Traumatic Stress into Post Traumatic Growth, Holly Dunn is at the top of the list. Holly’s message crosses all demographics. Her story is one all should read because sooner or later we all face some. The Weekly Fight

Holly In The News

National Media Tour for "Sole Survivor"

Holly K. Dunn, The Sole Survivor to be featured by the Junior League of Richmond, 73rd Book and Author Event, May 2018.

On November 8th of 2017 we had the honor of working out with and listening to Holly speak about her trauma. For our Veteran community it help them to see that they are not they only ones affected by this and you can overcome it. We are truly grateful for Holly taking time to give back to our Veteran community. I highly recommend anyone affected by trauma to read Holly's experiences and triumphs. --Marty Kenny SgtMaj USMC Retired
“I hope it’s inspirational to them,” Dunn said in a phone interview Tuesday. “Everybody’s been through something. Yes, my story is very unique. But everybody’s been through brokenness. … If you know that you can go through that brokenness but you can be OK and you can live a happy life, that’s what my book’s trying to tell them. “If you’re happy in your life, then you’ve survived, you’ve thrived.”

Holly’s work includes being the spokesperson for Holly’s House a local sexual abuse and domestic violence advocacy center which she co-founded in her hometown of Evansville, IN. That passion later evolved into her current full-time work as a motivational speaker and trainer, using her own experience and uplifting message to inspire and enlighten.

“For a long time, I avoided railroad tracks any way I could,” she said. “And anytime I heard the sound of a train, I just kind of shut down.”

“I’m still healing from this. I’ll always be healing. You guys are a part of my healing process now and you can’t get out of it,” she said. “When you talk about something, it loses its power over you.”

"I deal with trauma in Veterans all the time. When I look for examples of how people turn Post Traumatic Stress into Post Traumatic Growth, Holly Dunn is at the top of the list. Trauma is trauma, whether rape, combat related or a car accident. Holly’s message crosses all demographics. Her story is one all should read because sooner or later we all face some form of Trauma. This book should be on everyone’s must read in 2018." The Weekly Fight, Philadelphia, PA

"Holly Dunn has taken an unimaginable experience and became a face and voice for so many other survivors. Being the lone survivor of a serial killer Holly could have stayed silent instead she faced her attacker and choose to speak out. Putting a face and voice on sexual violence. Her story is one of resilience, courage, and gives hope to so many survivors." Erin Merryn Author, Speaker, founder of Erin's Law

Book Reviews

But I would highly recommend this book for anyone who needs to forgive...The only regret I have about this book, is that I didn't buy a hard copy to pass on. Yes, I knew this story, and yes, I am biased. But I would highly recommend this book for anyone who needs to forgive. Not forget. Holly shows that not only can you survive, you can thrive. Any victim of a violent crime, this is for you. If you love a person who has survived an attack of any kind, this book is for you. It lays out how we should ALL treat and talk to each other. Something as simple as not treating a victim of sexual crime as we do criminals. Sitting in waiting rooms, and dark , scary places?? I never thought of this before. But the take away for me is how much I need to forgive and move on. I keep thinking if she can do it, I certainly can. Nothing I have lived through could have been as bad as her experience. I only hope I can have the grace and honesty as Holly.

Such a positive, strong young lady! Living her life in such a way to show others they too can survive traumatic events. I didn’t meet Holly until 2000 but knew some of her story because my son was Chris’ fraternity brother and he of course knew Holly. Even though I knew part of what happened in 1997, I couldn’t put the book down. It was as if I could hear her voice as I read. With her words, Holly unselfishly lets us all see the unthinkable trauma she endured, then took us on her journey of healing that continues every day. So many people I’m sure need to know emotional healing is possible. That’s exactly what Holly wants to show others, and I think she is doing that beautifully. She is one of the strongest young ladies I’ve ever met, determined to not let what happened to her define who she is. Her book explains clearly how she accomplished this. So proud to know her.

A Must Read This was a wonderful book! I couldn’t put it down. Holly is an admirable and courageous woman!! Being from her Hometown, I’ve known her story, but there was so much depth in here, that it was like she was personally telling it to me. This is a book that keeps you interested from start to finish- even if you already know the story. 😃
