Pre Pedal star of the cycling journey

Over the last months Conwy School Sport have been working in partnership with Road Safety team to deliver Pre Pedal training in Conwy’s Primary Schools.

The training aims to teach Reception year pupils to use balance bikes confidently.

A Balance bike, has no pedals or chain. The child uses their feet to propel themselves along, quickly learning the skills to glide, scoot, start and stop confidently.

As the balance bikes does not have pedals it means that children can concentrate on the core skills of balance and gross motor control needed to perfect riding without having to grasp propulsion and foot and leg positioning at the same time. Making learning to ride a lot easier. These skills will allow the children to develop and advance to a pedal bike with no stabilisers quicker allowing them to learn to ride a bike at a younger age.

200 Reception Year pupils have received Balance Bike training over the last months within various schools in Conwy. The skills they develop during the Pre Pedal training will assist pupils when progressing to Scootability and Bikeability cycle training later in their school life.
