Adventures in Body Modification Katherine Cullinan

Body modification (or body alteration) is the deliberate altering of the human anatomy or human physical appearance. Done for aesthetics, sexual enhancement, rites of passage, religious beliefs, to display group membership or affiliation, to create body art, for shock value, and as self-expression, among other reasons.
Evolution of body modification
  • First documentation of body suspension in 1832
  • Mandan tribe ceremony, celebration of creation of the Earth
  • Missouri River banks
  • Tattooing origins - 4th millenium BC
  • Otzi the Iceman
  • Ears pierced
  • Cultural significance
Popular in modern times, transformed
health risks are endless: skin tears, infection, scarring
Clearly defined line that can't be crossed without serious consequences, consequentiality, fatefulness
primary skills, secondary skills
Edgework sensations: - hyperreality, self-actualization, alteration of time and space, ineffability
activity and passivity
social influences (me), but individual experience (I)

Body suspension can be a lifestyle, but it is a bounded adventure.

Tattoos, piercings, and some other forms of body modification are a lifetime adventure. A risky lifestyle.
