Austin Nature Day Join Austin Nature & SCience Center and partnering organizations for a day of self lead nature activities and live virtual programs.

When? April 24, 2021. Access resources all weekend long!

Where? Virtually! Participate from your home, backyard, or neighborhood park.

What? Each year, Austin Nature & Science Center hosts Austin Nature Day in conjunction with Earth Day celebrations around the world. We want to continue our annual transition of inspiring family and friends to explore nature, this year in a virtual format. This year, we bring you activities that inspire you to "Restore our Earth." Participate on your own using our virtual activity kit or join in our live programing with presentations geared for all ages! Attend our special Austin Nature Day Trade Counter event at the end of the day to tell us what you found on your adventures.

10am Welcome to Austin Nature Day

Speakers: Megan and Kristi from Austin Nature & Science Center

Join us for a welcome from Austin Nature & Science Center. Hear about the presentations we have planned and how to use our online resources. Hear about our Virtual Trade Counter and how to identify things you find in nature.

10:30am Navigating iNaturalist

Speakers: Austin Park Ranger Jimmy

Audience: Families

Join us for a talk about community science! We’ll examine a brief history of community science including bird counts and Master Naturalists. Then, we’ll look at a few community science apps you can download and use. We will go in depth into using iNaturalist, one of the most popular community science apps. We are also hosting a BioBlitz for the weekend, with a prize from the Austin Park Rangers for the most observations logged! Go out there and get observing!

11am PollinATX- Who We Are and What We Do

Speaker: Rachel Raise from PollinATX

Audience: Families/ Adults

Learn about Pollinate Austin, an organization aimed at pollinator education, outreach and engagement. Learn about our current initiatives, why pollinators need our help, and what you can do for them!

11:30am Keep Austin Beautiful: Generation Zero Waste

Speaker: Keep Austin Beautiful

Audience: Families/ Adults

This Generation Zero presentation is part of KAB’s larger education program, created in partnership with Austin Resource Recovery. Our programming raises awareness about recycling, composting, and conservation while giving students and community members simple solutions for reducing their waste. We will discuss tips and tricks for recycling and composting here in the Austin area.

12pm Waterloo & You: Bringing More Green to Downtown

Speakers: Melissa Ayala (Waterloo Greenway), Susan Kenzle (Watershed Protection Department), Lana Denkeler (Parks and Recreation Department)

Audience: General Public

Set to open this summer, Waterloo Park brings together Austin's favorites: park space, trails, music, food trucks; while restoring our local environment. Tune in to learn about the many exciting Earth-friendly projects happening now along Waterloo Greenway. Join us to hear how you can be a part of it and be green at home!

12:30pm Intro to Leave No Trace Workshop

Speaker: Melissa Hand, City of Austin Park Rangers

Audience: Recommended 10+

Leave No Trace is a series of outdoor ethics that help us enjoy our outdoor spaces. Come and learn with Ranger Melissa about Leave No Trace’s 7 principals, how to follow them, and why they are important to keeping Austin’s parks beautiful for years to come.

4:00pm Trade Counter with ANSC

Speaker: Austin Nature & Science Center Trade Counter

Audience: Kids/ Families

Let's regroup and tell each other stories about our adventures of the day! Talk about the cool nature items you found and earn points to use towards other nature items once ANSC and the Trade Counter reopen.
