Kamiak Parent Bulletin

UPDATE FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

For students (and parents):

The past few weeks have been a chaotic and unsettling time for all of us. Students, teachers, parents, and administrators had to breathe, reflect, and organize our ideas before moving forward. Now that we have moved ahead with remote learning, you will notice more teachers offering “live” learning opportunities, typically through Zoom. For some of you, this is already causing anxiety because teachers are inviting you to conflicting Zoom meetings or otherwise asking you to do two things at once. In order to reduce that anxiety and to add some sort of order to our changing world, Kamiak is introducing a basic schedule of reserved remote learning slots, organized by class period.

Please note: This schedule does NOT mean that you will always have “classes” during each of these time slots. These times are merely reserved, should your teachers choose to host a Zoom class, schedule an online conversation, provide a live lecture, etc. You should get into the habit of regularly checking in on Google Classroom (or whatever platform for communication your teacher uses) to find out if any such events are occurring or if there is any other information you need in order to stay connected. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these new waters.

  • Mondays: Periods 1, 2, and 3
  • Tuesdays: Reserved for special services/ Tier 3 interventions for struggling students/ staff collaboration
  • Wednesdays: Periods 4, 5, and 6
  • Thursdays: Reserved for special services/ Tier 3 interventions for struggling students/ staff collaboration
  • Fridays: Periods 0 and 7

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Time Limits. Based on OSPI guidelines and best teaching practices, it is suggested that direct instruction should not exceed 30 minutes per session. However, students and teachers may choose to stay on Zoom (or similar platforms) beyond the 30-minute mark to ask/answer questions or to maintain social connections with peers.
  • Zoom Participation: Students are expected to participate and engage in distance learning. Attendance for live Zoom sessions cannot be made mandatory for students, but students who cannot attend live sessions should contact their teachers to make alternative arrangements. Teachers will be prepared to present content through a variety of media/access points to meet student needs.
  • Content: Teachers are not limited to assigning/posting activities only on these scheduled meeting days or via Zoom. Teachers may post content on their virtual class platforms at any time. The above schedule is only for live teaching sessions. Students are expected to check their virtual class platforms regularly.
  • Extenuating Circumstances: Your schedules are complicated right now, and so are the schedules of our staff members. Some teachers may have extenuating circumstances that force them to host classes outside of the official schedule. Those teachers will make sure to schedule their sessions in empty timeslots. This flexibility will allow students the opportunity to participate in as many sessions as possible.

Materials Distribution:

As part of our commitment to ensuring access to learning for all students, we are also implementing materials distribution process at Kamiak High School. Distribution will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our regular business hours (7:30 to 3:00), and students may be assigned a specific window of time to come to campus to ensure proper social distancing. If your student needs materials to engage in class, please have them contact the classroom teacher directly. Once materials are ready, your student’s teacher will notify them when to collect materials at Kamiak. If special arrangements need to be made outside of the regular hours, please let the teacher know also.

family messages from the district:

Google Classroom resources:

Several short videos about using Google Classroom have been added to the district student website. More will be added soon. Google Classroom instructions are also available in languages including Arabic, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

Still need a laptop?

  • Students who still need a laptop may contact the call center at 425-366-2100 or by emailing Corona@mukilteo.wednet.edu.
  • Need login or technical support? If you are a student with login issues or a district-issued computing device and you need technical support, please check first with your teacher. If they are not able to resolve it, they can open a technology service center ticket for you.

Grading:

District leadership received an update from State Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Chris Reykdal about grading. OSPI shared that grading will “do no harm,” meaning that no student’s grade will be negatively impacted by the closure and no students will fail a course. For high school students, the state has determined students will receive a letter grade or, if the student is not able to demonstrate proficiency, an incomplete. Families who have a student who receives special services may not typically receive a letter grade and should refer to their IEP and contact their school staff if they have questions.

School districts have some options about which letter grades to offer and how incomplete grades may be made up. District leadership is working with teachers and principals to determine the best grading option for Mukilteo School District students and will update staff and families by the end of next week.

Attendance

Attendance will be recorded based on student engagement with the continuous learning schedule. For example, if a teacher has one class check-in with students per week, attendance will be collected on students who are able to check in. Attendance is not driving apportionment, the funding school districts receive for each enrolled student.

Now providing weekend meals!

In addition to weekday meals, the district is now approved to provide weekend meals. Each student picking up meals at one of the meal locations will receive a bag each Friday containing a breakfast and lunch for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All meals will be included in one bag handed out at each site (including bus routes) starting this Friday, April 17.

The bags will include packaged items that can be heated at home with cooking instructions included (Spanish and English). Attached is an updated menu, including many hot entrees for lunches.

If you have food allergies or are vegetarian, you may contact Food and Nutrition Services to request an alternate lunch at 425-356-1212.

Library resources:

Sno-Isle Library System is sharing online and digital resources with families and you don’t need a physical library card! You can register online with just your name, address and email address to gain access to library resources including videos, music, magazines, ebooks, graphic novels and more. Watch a quick video to begin your journey with ebooks and audio books through downloadable apps like Libby and Overdrive. For Mukilteo School District students, open the Microsoft application store on your district device, find Overdrive, and install.

flyers HAVE GONE digital:

Say goodbye to crumpled flyers at the bottom of student backpacks that surface after an opportunity has passed. We have implemented an electronic flyer distribution system. Families will get flyers in their email inbox instead. Schools and outside organizations will have a more accessible, environmentally friendly and interactive way of sharing flyers and newsletters. Primary guardians with an email address on file at their child’s school will automatically begin receiving flyers by email. If a family member would like to also receive them, they can subscribe on the school website.

Blackboard Connect Portal:

The school district uses a system called Blackboard Connect to send important messages to parents via telephone, text, and email. If you would like to change to the way you receive messages, login to your Blackboard Connect Portal and edit your contact information.

Change in School Closure or Delay Notification:

This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. If you added a text message number in the Blackboard portal, you will also receive a text message. As usual, it will also be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.

Mukilteo School District complies with federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate in any programs or activities on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups. The following individuals have been designated to handle questions or complaints of alleged discrimination: Title IX Officer - Bruce Hobert (425-356-1319), Section 504 Coordinator – Lisa Pitsch (425-356-1277), and the ADA/Access Coordinator – Karen Mooseker (425-356-1330), all located at 9401 Sharon Drive in Everett, WA 98204.
