What is Matter By Lanie Godinez

Matter is a physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit. Matter also has to sections Pure Substance and Mixture. I am going to talk about Pure Substance.

Example 1: both a camera and a dog are matter, since they take up space and have mass. Example 2: A box is matter because it takes up space.

Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or molecule. Pure substance has to sections also they are element and compound.

Examples: include tin, sulfur, diamond, water, pure sugar , table salt and baking soda . ... All elements are pure substances. Water, sugar, salt and baking soda are pure substances which are chemical compounds.

Element is a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic

Example 1:Water decomposes into a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen when an electric current is passed through the liquid. Example 2:Hydrogen and ununoctium are two examples of the more than 100 elements that have either been discovered in nature or synthesized by scientists.

Compound is a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements

Example 1:Water - Formula: H2O = Hydrogen2 + Oxygen Example 2:Hydrogen Peroxide - Formula: H2O2 = Hydrogen2 + Oxygen2

The 2nd section of matter is mixture! Mixture is a substance made by mixing other substances together.

Examples of mixture is ice cubes in a drink, sand and water, and salt and oil.

Mixture has two sections also which is homogeneous and heterogeneous!

Homogeneous mixture is any combination of substances that has uniform composition and properties.

Example 1:Tap water and rain water are both homogeneous, even though they may have different levels of dissolved minerals and gases.

In homogeneous there is Solutions!!! Solution is a liquid mixture in which the minor component is uniformly distributed within the major component.

Example 1: solutions include water vapor in air, table sugar in water, steel, brass, hydrogen dissolved to palladium, carbon dioxide in water and ethanol in water. A solution is a homogeneous mixture of one substance dissolved in another.

The other section in Mixture is Heterogeneous!! Heterogeneous Mixture is of or denoting a process involving substances in different phases

Example 1:Salt and pepper, chocolate chip cookies, or a Twix Example 2: A bowl of Fruit Loops cereal is a heterogeneous mixture because it has cereal bits of many colors floating around in milk.

In Heterogeneous mixture there is suspension and colloid!!! Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase.

Example 1: salt water, sand in water, and muddy water.Example 2:Mixing or shaking needs to occur to form a suspension!

The next thing in Heterogeneous Mixture is Colloid!! Colloid is a mixture where at least two types of substances are placed together.

In the video above it talks about Colloid!!!!!!

Example 1: whipped cream, mayonnaise, milk, butter, gelatin, jelly, muddy water, plaster, colored glass, and paper.Example 2:Paint, ink, detergents, rubber

The End! Thanks for reading and watching Hope you enjoyed it.
