Early Dismissals And Parent Pickup Lines
We’re on the downside of 2019, and end-of-year events are starting to appear on our Family Calendar. For instance, we have several Early Dismissal Days this week:
- Monday, November 25th: Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the afternoon.
- Tuesday, November 26th: Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place in the afternoon.
- Wednesday, November 27th: Both students and employees will be dismissed early for Thanksgiving Break.
On Early Dismissal Days, students are dismissed on the schedule below:
- Grades 7-12: Dismissal is at 11:30 AM. Parent Pickup can begin no earlier than 11:00 AM, as there’s no room on campus for vehicles to wait.
- Grades K-6: Dismissal is at 12:15 PM. Elementary Parent Pickup can begin no earlier than 11:45 AM. Vehicles cannot arrive before 11:45 AM because there is no place on our campus for vehicles to wait.
As always, CCS Teachers, Instructional Assistants, and other school personnel will be assigned to help keep traffic flowing and maintain the safety of students, families, and employees.
Please follow our traffic monitors’ directions and treat them with courtesy and respect.

Cultivating Extraordinary Artistic Talent At CHS
Collegium High School (CHS) Art Teacher, Beth Steines, teaches several elective art courses, including Drawing 1. “The course provides an excellent foundation for most other art classes,” she explained. “Drawing is an essential art form and one of the earliest we learn. If a student knows how to draw, it’s much easier for them to learn how to use more advanced techniques, like painting, printmaking, and designing ceramics and sculptures.”
Most recently, Mrs. Steines’ Drawing 1 students learned about perspective, value scales (lightness and darkness), and human proportions. “The kids have been working to master facial proportions and facial features for a while now,” Ms. Steines said. “For their final project, I asked students to use all of their knowledge and skill to draw a portrait of someone they know. The results were very impressive!”
“When students are able to communicate their ideas in drawing and do so accurately, they have gained a valuable tool not only in art but in science and other areas. For instance, I’ve had students who take drawing and eventually go into engineering where they will use their drawing skills.” -Mrs. Beth Steines, CMS Art Teacher
In the piece pictured below, CCS 10th Grader, Maggie T., chose to draw a portrait of her friend, 10th Grader Alana B. “I chose Alana because I liked the lighting of the photo," Maggie said. “I used my favorite medium, graphite, and a blending stump to create the values.”
“I like art because I like seeing all of my work come together. Another medium I enjoy is working in pastels.” -CCS 10th Grader, Maggie T.
Madea P., an 11th Grader, chose to draw her Mother for her final project subject. “My Mom is very photogenic and was my inspiration. I used graphite pencils, a kneaded eraser, and a blending stump. I enjoy using 2B and HB pencils the most.”
“Art is a free space to create anything and helps release stress. I’m planning on pursuing physical therapy as a career but definitely plan on keeping art as my hobby in the future.” -Madea P., CCS 11th Grader
Mrs. Steines is very pleased with her students’ progress. “Each semester I am blessed to witness my students’ abilities grow. So often they come in wanting to be adept and are frustrated if they’re not experts,” she reflected. “I promise my students that each and every one of them can learn how to draw well. Once they spend some time working on the skills I teach, they start to really see their skills blossoming! In the process, they learn to be patient with themselves and to never lose sight of possibilities.”

High School Parent/Teacher Conferences
Collegium High School (CHS) Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place between 12:30 PM and 6:00 PM on Monday, November 25th, and Tuesday, November 26th. Conferences are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. To request a conference, Parents/Guardians should email the teachers with whom they wish to meet to make those arrangements. (Online scheduling ended Sunday, November 24th.)

Winter Wave Of 2019 Keystone Testing
The Pennsylvania State Keystone Exams will be held in Collegium High School (515 Building) and Collegium Middle School (535 Building) between Monday, December 2nd and Friday, December 13th. This Winter Wave of Keystone Testing is an opportunity for students who did not score “Proficient” during previous Keystone Testing to take the exam(s) again.
The Winter Wave 2019 Keystone Testing schedule is as follows:
Algebra 1 Keystone Exam

Literature Keystone Exam
- Wednesday, December 4th
- Thursday, December 5th
Biology Keystone Exam
- Monday, December 9th

All testing starts at 7:45 AM. Students should make sure to get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast before taking their Keystone Exams.
If your student is absent during Keystone testing, they will participate in make-up testing during the testing window.

Collegium Middle School (CMS) employees recently created a fresh, unique design for the 535 (Middle School) Building’s PRIDE Program. The T-shirts (pictured below) are on sale online now through Sunday, December 8th.
“With our building move, we wanted to revamp our PRIDE T-shirt design to make it more meaningful in this year of new beginnings,” said Ms. Jackie Faller, an Art Teacher in the 535 (MS) Building. “Proceeds from the T-shirt sales will go towards our PRIDE Program to purchase student incentives that teachers and administrators use to teach and reinforce good student behavior and positive student-to-student interactions.”
The three main components of CMS’s PRIDE Program are:
- Respect Yourself
- Respect Others
- Respect Our School
CMS students who display PRIDE behaviors are eligible to receive “PRIDE Certificates,” just as our Elementary students receive “ROAR Tickets.” Our 7th and 8th Graders can turn in their PRIDE Certificates for prizes or enter them in a Monthly PRIDE Raffle. Raffle prizes range from school supplies, snacks, and mesh backpacks, to PRIDE shirts.
CMS teachers and students can wear their newly purchased PRIDE T-shirts on CMS PRIDE Wednesdays (the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month) and school-wide Cougar PRIDE Days (the 2nd and 3rd Friday of every month).

ZOUP! Fundraiser for 468/486 Building's ROAR Program
Please come enjoy your dinner at Zoup! (Exton) on Tuesday, November 26th between 12:30 PM and 7:00 PM to support the 468/486 Building’s ROAR Program.
The Zoup! Community Foundation will donate up to 25% of your meal purchase to the 468/486 Building’s ROAR Program during the fundraiser. Zoup! is located in the Festival at Exton Shopping Center, right next store to the Oaklands Corporate Center.

Five Below Holiday Fundraiser
Holiday shopping is quickly approaching! Shop at Five Below's Downingtown location (next to Wegman's) between Saturday, November 30th and Saturday, December 14th, and Five Below will donate 10% of your purchases to the HSA. As with all HSA fundraisers, the HSA will use the proceeds of this Five Below Fundraising Shopping Event to support CCS activities and classrooms.
How does it work? Simply access the Five Below Fundraising Shopping Event flyer at the button below and show it to your Five Below Cashier at checkout. You can either print out the flyer or display it on your smartphone. Helping our HSA earn money for CCS couldn't be easier!

Family Bingo and Silent Auction Night Coming Soon
K-6th Grade students and their families are invited to join the HSA on Saturday, December 7th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM for Family Bingo and Silent Auction Night! Our event will be held in the 500 Building (500 James Hance Court, Exton, PA).
You can purchase Family Bingo and Silent Auction Night tickets online now or at the door on Saturday, December 7th. Online tickets are $14.00 per person; tickets at the door will be $16.00 per person. Doors will open at 4:00 PM.
Volunteers and items for our Silent Auction are still needed to help make the HSA’s Bingo and Silent Auction Night a winner! Please sign up for one or both, as you’re able, using the buttons provided.
The HSA is looking forward to a night of family fun and friendly competition at Family Bingo and Silent Auction Night! Proceeds from the event will help support funding the HSA provides for our students, staff, and school.
Obtaining Approval For Planned Absences
Will your child be absent from school because your family is taking a trip, visiting relatives, or scheduling college visits? Students may be excused from school for up to five (5) days for planned absences provided approval for the absences is obtained at least two weeks in advance from your building Principal.
To request approval, please submit a completed Request for Approval of Planned Absence Form to your building Principal at least ten (10) days prior to the first date of absence. Requests received after the absence has occurred will not be considered. The Request for Approval of Planned Absence Form is accessible at the button below.

Start Planning For CCS's STEM/Science Fairs
If you like asking questions about how things work, doing experiments, and learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, then you might really enjoy participating in Collegium’s STEM/Science Fairs!
It’s easy to create a fun STEM/Science Fair project out of just about anything that interests you. The first thing to do is to find a question you want to ask. Here are a few ideas:
- Why does fruit turn brown?
- Which materials can catch a bubble?
- Why don’t oil and water mix?
- What causes avalanches?
- What exactly is a “wintery mix” and how does it happen?
- Why do playdough and slime feel and act so different?
This year’s STEM/Science Fairs will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2020. Kindergarteners will have their own Fair and can do demonstrations or perform experiments for it. Students in 1st through 12th Grade must do experiments for their Fair using the Scientific Method:
- Purpose: What’s the question you want to ask?
- Hypothesis: What do you think will happen?
- Materials: List everything you’re going to use.
- Procedures: Write down what you’re going to do.
- Observations: Write down your data (what you saw happening during the experiment).
- Analysis: Compare what you saw happening (your data) to what you thought would happen (your hypothesis).
- Conclusion: What happened during your experiment? Was your hypothesis right or did your experiment prove you wrong?
All students who participate in the STEM/Science Fair will receive medals, and our Kindergarteners will receive certificates. Judges determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each grade for our 1st-12th Grade STEM/Science Fair. Winners in Grades 4-12 are eligible to move on to the Chester County Science Research Competition in March 2020.
There’s plenty of time to think about what you want to investigate, how you’ll do your experiment, and what your presentation will look like. Talk to your families and teachers about STEM/Science Fair project ideas you have, and check out some of the resources provided on our STEM/Science Fair webpage.

CHS To Host FAFSA Completion Night
Need help completing your child’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®)?
Collegium High School’s (CHS) Counseling Department is here to help! They’re hosting a FAFSA* Completion Night on Monday, November 25th at 7:00 PM in the 515 (High School) Building.
Financial Aid experts will be available at the event to answer questions and help guide students and parents/guardians through the process. Our CHS School Counselors will also be on hand to assist.

After RSVPing and before attending our FAFSA Completion Night, please also:
- Locate your 2018 tax returns to bring with you to the event. (Information from the return is required to complete the FAFSA.)

CCS Seniors and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend FAFSA Completion Night. Families have found the event to be very helpful in the past.

Nominations Open For Citadel's 2020 Heart Of Learning Award
For 19 years, Citadel has honored and recognized Chester County’s most extraordinary teachers based on nominations from students, parents/guardians, and community members.
If there are CCS Teachers you feel go above and beyond inside and outside of the classroom, please nominate them for this prestigious award! Citadel’s Heart of Learning Award Nomination Form is available at the button below. Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
Citadel receives and reviews thousands of nominations each year from which 15 finalists, and then three overall Heart of Learning Award winners, are selected. All 15 finalists are honored at Citadel’s annual Heart of Learning Award Banquet and receive cash prizes to use in their classrooms. Citadel presents the three overall winners with its Heart of Learning Award and $1,500 to use in each of their classrooms.
Citadel also tracks the total number of nominations received by school and awards cash prizes to the three schools with the most nominations.

Food Service Assistants
At CCS, our Food Service Assistants:
- Offer part-time, daytime hours (shifts are approximately 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM)
- Are responsible for breakfast and lunch preparation and service
- Include helping with clean-up and sanitation of food service areas
- Involve other tasks that contribute to efficient and tasty Food Service at CCS.
Instructional Assistants
CCS’s Instructional Assistants assist classroom teachers with:
- Small-group or individual instruction
- Essential classroom and classroom-related tasks
- Supervision of students
- Numerous other tasks that help the classroom run well.
We have both full- and part-time Instructional Assistant positions available. The part-time positions are perfect for students still taking teaching program classes who want to gain experience in the field.

If you have information about suspected criminal activity, we encourage you to contact the WWPD using the email address, or by leaving a voicemail message on the WWPD Tip Line.
