Spartan Week in Review October 22, 2018


The Spartans picked up three wins this past week including a key Capital Athletic Conference win over Southern Virginia on Saturday. York began the week with a 3-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night. They followed that with the 3-0 win over Southern Virginia in the opening match of Saturday’s tri-match. York then concluded the 3-0 week with a 3-0 win over Hood, a match that was preceded by the 2018 Senior Day ceremony for the six Spartan seniors.


The Spartans split their two home games for the week. The Green and White fell to St. Mary’s 2-1 on Wednesday evening before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory over Frostburg State on Senior Day. Against St. Mary’s, York fell behind early as the Seahawks scored 6:03 into the game. They made it 2-0 in the 54th minute. York avoided the shutout with a Jenna Cholowinski goal in the 76th minute. Against Frostburg State, it was York’s turn to get on the board early as Natalie McCarthy scored 3:24 into the game to give York the early advantage. Megan Stoltzfus gave York an insurance goal in the 50th minute for the 2-0 win. Jess Weiber notched the shutout with three saves.


The Spartans saw their win streak come to an end against #8 Salisbury on Wednesday but York didn’t go down without a fight as York fell 4-3 in a well-played game by both sides. The Green and White bounced back with a huge 4-3 road win at Mary Washington as junior Greta Plappert notched a hat-trick in the win. In the loss to Salisbury, Plappert scored twice for the Spartans while Dana Meehling added a goal for the Green and White. In the win over UMW, Meehling notched the game-winning goal for the Spartans with just over five minutes remaining in the game.


The Spartans dropped a pair of matches for the week. York got blanked 3-0 at St. Mary’s on Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks got a goal early in the game and a second one early in the second half to put the game away. York had a number of chances but couldn’t put one home as they suffered the road setback. The Spartans then dropped a 1-0 decision to Frostburg State on Saturday as the Bobcats scored 5:02 in the game and then hung on as the Spartans again had numerous chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.


The Spartan women’s swim squad opened their campaign with two wins at the Franklin & Marshall Fall Quad on Saturday in Lancaster. The Spartans defeated Franklin & Marshall 146-114 and Widener 169-91 but fell to Mary Washington 156-104. Junior Justine Wantz earned wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke while Madeline Mann and Adrianna Ayala also picked up individual wins for York. Mann won the 200 freestyle and also finished second in the 500 freestyle and the third in the 100 freestyle. Ayala earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle.


The Spartan men opened the season on Saturday with a trip to Lancaster to participate in the Franklin & Marshall Fall Quad. The Spartans went 1-2 as they defeated Widener but fell to Mary Washington and the host Diplomats. Sophomore Keven Stahl had a huge day as he picked up three wins in the meet. Stahl won the 1000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Stahl was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay team that finished fourth.
