Aubrey's Portfolio Digital Photography II

Tim Tadder Recreation Image

Exposure: 1/100 a second at f 5.0

For this assignment I wanted to do one of the weird painted people things with the painted hands but no one in my family wanted to have their face painted so I had to use a foam head from the craft store (very sad and salty still). I didn't want to use the same colors that Tim did with red and white so I instead used black and purple because I thought there would be a good amount of contrast between those colors that would look somewhat appealing. I tried to get an angle kind of on the side of the fact so it is more dramatic and then had the painted hands on either side of the face to contrast the darkness. In photoshop I fixed some of the colors and made it a bit cooler toned then also added a slight vignette to the image to make it more dramatic. In the future I would try and do a better job at painting but I am most definitely not an artist and tried my best.

The Power of Photography

Exposure: 1/40 a second at f 4.0

I really had no idea what I was going to do for this assignment and it was really starting to stress me out. Then I remembered all of the other homework I had to do and that also made me feel stressed. So then I came up with the idea doing something with the stress homework puts on people. I had my sister sit down at her desk and then put a bunch of crumbled papers and things and pencils on the desk to make it give off a stressed vibe and then I told her to look stressed and sad (lol). Once I got the picture and started editing it I was not very happy with the lighting as it was very dark so I brightened up the image a little bit but overall I didn't think there was much I could do for this image besides fix her skin. I think in the future I could be more creative because this is a really cool assignment and I made it boring by just having my subject sit at a desk.

Light Painting

Exposure: 15 seconds at f 14

This assignment was hard. I struggled many times trying to get my subject to cooperate as well as figuring out the lighting. I started with a flashlight but none of those photos were turning out and they were either too dark or too bright. Then I started using my phone I pulled up a photo of a rainbow to try and get some of those different colors in contrast to my white dog. I had him lay down in front of the camera and then waved the phone in various different ways behind him. It took many tries to get a photo I somewhat liked but this is what I came up with. The original photo had a large shadow on the left side so I used the white and black paintbrush on a low opacity to try and balance out either side of the image. Then I also decided to turn everything but the light black and white to get some more contrast in the photo to try and draw viewers in. In the future I might try being more creative with the light I am using instead of just a boring flashlight or the phone light. Overall, I am happy with how this turned out even though it took like two years for me to figure out the right shutter speed and what to do with the light.

Product Shoot

Exposure: 1/40 a second at f4.0

This is my photo for my product shoot. I don't have a set up at home so in order to do this I set up sort of a box of blank paper one on the table one behind the product on the wall and then two on either side attached to binders standing up. I put the table in front of a window to try and get some natural light then I also had two desk lights with settings to change what the light looks like. I turned the lamps on the daylight setting and place them over the item but slightly in front. This created a bit of a shadow behind the honey so I also had my sister behind me holding a piece of paper up to try and get some light bouncing onto the shadow. It worked pretty well to lighten the shadow up but the shadow is still obviously there. I lightened the shadow a bit more in photoshop as well using the shadow slider in camera raw. Overall I am happy with this product shoot and how it turned out I just wish there was a bit more in the picture to try and sell the item rather than just a bottle of honey. I tried doing something like putting honey around the bottle in different designs but I didn't like how those pictures turned out and thought the photo just looked messy so I picked this one as my photo for the assignment.

  • Emotionally: I thought emotionally this photo is pretty bland. I don't really feel anything when looking at this photo except I also don't think it gives off bad feelings so maybe it gives off an emotion of satisfaction or peace?
  • Technically: I thought the simplicity of the photo was nice and how it is shot as a portrait rather than a landscape. However, I wish there were less shadows right behind the bottle of honey and I also wish the background wasn't as dark I tried fixing this using a blank piece of white paper to bounce the light but found little success in doing that. I also wish there was something else in the photo rather than just honey but that falls in the artistic category.
  • Artistically: I wish there was something more in the image to draw viewers. I could have added something else in front of the honey like maybe a little picture of a bee I printed out or I could have done something with the actual honey in front of it like try and draw something out. Right now it is pretty artistically boring which causes an absence of emotional feel in the image.
Here is the other photo I tried to do with the honey. It was very difficult trying to coordinate where the honey was going so it did not work well in my opinion.

Environmental Portrait

Exposure: 1/40 a second at f4.0

This assignment was very difficult for me to get an idea as to what I was going to take a picture of. I ended up taking a picture of my sister obsessing over trying to feed her bearded dragon. I didn't completely understand what a environmental portrait was but it seemed like she was in her environment. The original photo had a lot of shadows on the right side behind her shoulder so I tried to get rid of those in camera raw using the shadow slider thing. I think it turned out okay but I think I need to start paying more attention in shadows in my images because I ended up struggling to get shadows out in the last assignment as well. I also wish the focus was on my sister as well as the lizard right now it is mostly focused on the lizard. I wasn't sure if there was a way to change the focus in photoshop though. Next time we take pictures I will be sure to pay attention to the focus and shadows in my images.

  • Emotionally: I think this image gives off a happy emotion or feels kind of obsessive I guess in the way the subject is looking at the bearded dragon.
  • Technically: For the technicalities I wish I would have focused more on the focus when taking the image (lol) right now a majority of the focus is on the bearded dragon instead of on the subject. I also wish I would had looked at the light more because the right side of the image is a little dark.
  • Artistically: I thought the overall image was pretty artistically pulled together but I think it needed something more to show she is in her environment I'm just not sure what that something would be.

This is my picture for the lifestyle assignment. I tried to make it so there is a simplistic feeling to the image by placing the bowl on a white table. However there were some shadows on the table that I tried to get rid of but I thought it looked too bright without the shadows. Overall, I am happy with this image and the vibes it gives off. (also I don't know why there is a black line on the left side it isn't in the original picture)

Self Portrait

Exposure: 1/8 a second at f4.0

This is my photo for the self portrait assignment I took it as the sun was setting to try and get some of the orange light coming through the window then I moved the curtain in so it faded a little bit. I also wore red to try and match with the colors from the sun kind of. I am happy with it turned out I just wish it wasn't so dark on some parts of my face and on the edges.

Composition

This is my photo for the composition assignment for framing. I put the subject on the stairs and then held a treat right above the camera lens to try and get him to look and get his head straight between the railing so it frames the subject. I am happy with how this turned out I just wish it was a bit more symmetrically but also this could be fixed by cropping down the right side of the image a while.
