your in-home session how to prep, relax, and have fun

planning

You know the saying, "home is where the heart is." It's so so true! In-home family sessions have become my all-time favorite type of session because your home is where you plant your roots and nourish them. Its where you laugh and cry and do all the in-betweens. Its where your whole family feels most comfortable being themselves; its where you create and weave your story together, and THAT is what I want to capture. Thank you for hiring me for that!

You probably won't listen to me, but please do not stress about your house being perfect. You are most likely comparing it to the fancy photos you see in Sunset Magazine or other published works. Any home that is lived and loved in does not look cleaned up and perfect. Plus, do you want me to capture perfect, or real? I'm all in for the imperfect. The real. The perfectly imperfect. (Did I just blow your mind there?!)

before your session

Tidying up is fine, but again, your house does not have to be spick and span. Open all window shades. We will do a walk through when I get there, so I can see where the best light is and where you like to hang out.

Do not be surprised (or alarmed) if I ask to move a few furniture pieces around. I do this all the time! I sometimes need to get creative to capture you in the best way where the best light is with the right furniture.

Have the kids fed before I arrive. Tell them I want them to show me their favorite rooms and places.

Sessions last about an hour or two. There is no rush. We go with the flow and take breaks and change rooms based on how everyone is feeling. We'll have fun, too!

what to wear - kids

Neutral, classic, quirky clothes are fun! Make sure your child feels comfortable in what they're wearing. If they're not, they may be more concerned with their clothes than interacting with me (or you). Dress to their personality and your style aesthetics. Avoid neons and big logos.

For big sisters, plain white tank tops with jeans, or soft, subtle vintage white or cream dresses work really well. Simple goes a long way, and it brings the focus of the photos to their beautiful faces. Whatever you decide on, make sure it is something they are comfortable in. Keep their hair down and unstyled, as I love to incorporate it in the session.

For big brother: A pair of jeans and simple t-shirt are preferred. If he (or you) are not comfortable with this, a fitted white t-shirt or neutral clothing is just fine.

Or let him pick what he wants to wear but avoid neons!

Comfortable is best! I want to celebrate who you are, right now, and tell your true story.

natural, minimal, and you.

Mom & Dad, you are a big part of the show

Photographing the connection between you and your family is one of my all time favorite things, because the connections and love you show for each other lights up your souls and comes oozing out through expressions and emotions. It's your true one-of-a-kind story and you are a big part of it. You are amazing and beautiful, and perfectly YOU. Expect to be in a lot of the photos, just doing your thing: loving your kids in your home.

what to wear - Mom and Dad

Dads: encourage dad to wear what he is comfortable in. If it's a t-shirt and jeans, that's great! If you're a casual family, then embrace it. If you want your family to be a little more styled or trendy, then go for that. I think being in your home gives you free reign to dress how you would at home, barefoot and all (actually, barefoot preferred unless you all have super fun socks!)

Moms: Please wear what you love! Same rules apply for you as for Dads. If you love neutral colors, then wear neutral colors. Flowy, light and airy blouses or dresses always photograph well and give photos a touch of detail without distracting from the story. Keep the color neutral and design simple. Be sure that you have very fresh or no nail polish as your hands will make their way into the images.

If you have something you absolutely love, then style the rest of the family around what you are going to wear. And when I say style, I'm really talking about having similar color palettes.

comfortable, neutral clothing choices

during the session - your moments, your story.

Last, I would like you tell you about the types of photos we will capture. We will get candid and imperfect but elegant and natural family & sibling photos. I aim to capture zoomed out photos of you together in your home. I love to give minimal direction for how you want to hang out because I want to see how you naturally do it, until I see something and I'll shout, "Stay right there!" or "Stop! Do that again!". I am not kidding. :) I also try to take many in-between shots when you don't know I'm looking to capture the beautiful un-posed moments. I also tend to get creative with compositions and double exposures, which you've see in my portfolio.
