Nearly three dozen Bemidji State students traveled to St. Paul March 4-5 to compete in the annual U Dance Fest hosted by the University of Minnesota.
The students were guided by BSU dance advisor Suzy Langhout and her dance partner and husband Hondo, who organize activities and lead instruction as often as six times per week.
The students are involved in a variety of BSU dance groups including the for-credit Social Dance, Ballroom Dance and Methods of Teaching Dance courses, the Swing Dance and Ballroom Dance clubs, the BSU Dance line and others.
During the two-day competition, BSU dancers received 75 callbacks, the first sign of success for a new dancer, six appearances in event finals, a third-place finish, a second-place finish and a first-place finish in the Jack and Jills event.
BSU dancers also received their first-ever callback and semifinal appearance in the Team Event, which featured five six-person teams competing head-to-head with teams from other universities.
BSU's participation in the U Dance Fest is increasing dramatically – three years ago, just six students competed in the event.
The annual event, held in St. Paul's Union Depot, is hosted by the University of Minnesota Ballroom Dance Club.
