It's been a long time, a long time coming. But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will (The fight for civil rights has been going on for many years during this time period, this line shows the hope that Sam Cooke has along with the African american community)
It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die. 'Cause I don't know what's up there, beyond the sky (Living as an African American, life has been hard for Sam but he has fought hard and doesn't want to die he wants to keep fighting for his rights)
Somebody keep tellin' me don't hang around (Because he is African American people told him not to hang around town)
Then I go to my brother. And I say brother help me please (he prays to god in hope for a better life)
There have been times that I thought I couldn't last for long. But now I think I'm able to carry on (this line represents the hope and strength that the black community had during the hard fight for civil rights)
