The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation names Macauley Whiting, Jr. President Emeritus and elects Ruth A. Doan President

Midland, MI - June 28, 2019 - The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation announced that its board of trustees named Macauley Whiting Jr. as President Emeritus and elected Ruth A. Doan as President. Both Whiting and Doan remain Trustees of the Foundation and members of the Executive Committee. As part of succession planning, the appointments are effective in September 2019.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as President of the Foundation for the past five years and to get to know so many great people in Midland,” said Whiting. “It has been particularly rewarding to lead the innovative Whiting Forest project at Dow Gardens, the Foundation’s largest-ever capital project, as well as complete transformative Downtown projects such as the Streetscape and Courthouse renovation, and help establish the Michigan State University STEM Center in Midland.”

“I am pleased to have the confidence of the Board of Directors and Mike’s support as I begin my presidency this fall,” said Doan. “I look forward to furthering the Foundation’s mission to benefit the people of Midland and the state of Michigan.”

Whiting’s board service at the Foundation began in 1996 as an Associate Trustee. He became a Trustee in 1997, served as Secretary from 2000-2005, Treasurer from 2005-2015 and was named President in 2014. In addition to Whiting’s continuing service as President Emeritus, his current local community service includes Michigan Baseball Operations Board member, MidMichigan Health Finance Committee member, President of the Macauley and Helen Dow Whiting Foundation and Trustee Emeritus of Northwood University.

“I am pleased to support Ruth as our next President. Her knowledge of Midland, experience in philanthropy, and demonstrated excellence in leading nonprofit organizations are among the reasons our Board selected her as our next President,” said Whiting.

Doan’s board service at the Foundation began in 2004 as an Associate Trustee. She became a Trustee in 2006 and has served as Assistant Secretary since 2014. In addition to Doan’s continuing service as a Trustee, her current community service includes serving as President of the Board of Trustees at Gifft Hill School, St. John, United States Virgin Islands, as well as volunteering in her present home town of Roanoke, Virginia.
