A Tale of Two Cities by: Charles dickens

Book the First : Doctor Alexandre Mannett

" ' I hope you care to be recalled to life?' And the old answer: 'I can't say' (57).

Locked away for 18 long torturous years. Mannett's only outlet is to go to what calms him, making shoes. Although he doesn't talk much he still is a significant character.

He had "set up" the mood for the rest of the following story. "Troubled"

" After a long silence , the head was lifted for another moment, and the voice replied, 'Yes--- I am working.' ... The faitness of the voice was pitiable and dreadful. It was not the faitness of physical weakness... it was the faitness of solitude and disuse. It was the feeble evho of a sound made long and long ago. So entirely had it lost the life and resonance of the human voice..." (47).
