Art and the Everyday Studio Art: Drawing and painting

The artist's eye transforms the ordinary and everyday into a kind of visual poetry. Through the choices, they make of what to show and how to show it artists elevate the mundane, highlight intricacies, tell stories, and find beauty in the overlooked. In this extraordinary year, we have spent an enormous amount of time living and learning in our own spaces. We have had to adjust our surroundings to accommodate multiple activities and to support us with inspiration, interest, and comfort. When we see the same things, day in and day out, they can start to become almost invisible to us.

The artists in this show were looking at the material world around them - the ordinary everyday items that are a part of their lives. Through their arrangement and attention, the artist imbues these objects with memory, story, value, and even humor.

These drawings are our first finished works that bring together a range of skills that we learned, both together and apart, in this most unusual of school years.
