Second Grade Music September-NOvember 2016

Our music curriculum

In Second Grade, the students will be focusing on three main units:

  1. Musical Communities
  2. Becoming a Composer
  3. How Sound is Made

Each unit will last around 3 months. Below are the enduring understandings that the students have been working on for our first unit.

Musical Communities:

  • All people sing
  • All people around the world make music
  • Different countries can have similar traditions
  • Music can inspire movement

the musical activities in class:

The students have been building our musical community by using many African Folk Songs. The Second Graders have been singing, moving and playing instruments from Africa. The students also added various instruments as sound effects to the African Folk tale “Honey Honey Lion” by Jan Brett.

Next, the students have been learning American Folk songs and folk dancing. We continue to reflect on our understanding that music is being created all over the world.
