Spartan Week in Review November 5, 2018

Wrestling

The Spartan wrestling squad kicked off their 2018-19 season in impressive fashion as the Green and White dominated the Monarch Invitational, winning the event with 206.5 points. The Spartans had four individual champions as Greg Warner (149 pounds), Frankie Krauss (184 pounds), Hasan Alic (197 pounds), and freshman Jared Kuhns (125 pounds) all earned championships to open the season. Warner won his 100th career match with his win in the quarterfinals. He is now one of five Spartans to notch 100 wins in the rich history of the program. Sophomore Eric Hutchinson (157 pounds) and senior Joe Sindoni (174 pounds) each finished second in their respective weight classes.

Field Hockey

The Spartan field hockey squad saw their impressive 2018 campaign come to a close on Wednesday as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Christopher Newport in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals in York. Junior Greta Plappert opened the scoring in the 24th minute off a pass from Dana Meehling. The Captains tied the score four minutes before the half. CNU won the game with just over five minutes left in regulation. The Spartans ended their campaign with a mark of 10-8 after finishing second in the CAC.

Volleyball

The Spartan volleyball team made a fantastic run to the CAC semifinals only to see their season come up two points short to the eventual CAC champion CNU Captains. The Spartans began the week with a 3-2 first round win over Frostburg in York. Junior Madyson Whitcomb led York with 15 kills while Brooke Krebs added 13 kills and 15 digs. Alexis Harbold recorded 34 digs in the win. Against CNU, the Spartans won the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead. The Captains forced a decisive fifth set and overcame a 12-9 deficit to earn a 17-15 win in the fifth. Krebs led the Spartans with 12 kills and 15 digs while Cheyenne Altland added 8 kills and five block assists. Alexis Harbold had 18 digs for the Spartans. York finished the year with a record of 20-9 as they finished third in the CAC.

Men's Swimming

The Spartan men picked up a Capital Athletic Conference road win on Saturday at St. Mary's as York defeated the Seahawks 138-93. York improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the CAC. York had three swimmers earn two wins each during the meet. Sophomore All-American Keven Stahl won the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. Tyler Maggio recorded victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke while Jesse Tate touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Greg Williams earned York's other win as he won the 200 backstroke.

Women's Swimming

The Spartans picked up their fourth win of the year as they went on the road and defeated St. Mary's College 140-114 in a Capital Athletic Conference meet. The Spartans improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAC. York had three swimmers earn multiple wins on the afternoon. Andrea Sturgis won the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. Justine Wantz won the 100 and 200 backstroke events while Alyssa Coon was victorious in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Adrianna Ayala earned a win in the 50 freestyle while she also finished with a third place finish in the 100 freestyle.
