Project Description:

One of the top priorities in the Notre Dame Athletic Masterplan was a new practice facility for Men’s and Women’s Basketball. A new student recreation center was being built on campus, the Smith Center for Recreational Sports, which created an option to convert the existing student recreation center to a practice facility. Work began in January 2018 to repurpose the Rolfs Sports Recreation Center.

The Rolfs Sports Recreation Center was converted to entirely athletics use, and specifically dedicated to both varsity basketball programs, with all the support functions in one location. This created the largest basketball-only practice facility in the NCAA.

The Rolfs Athletics Hall entry level features video rooms, team lounges and locker rooms, views into both practice gyms, locker areas for coaching and support staffs, and locker spaces for basketball alumni, practice players, and other guests. The lower level includes a nutrition bar, sports medicine facility with hydrotherapy, strength and conditioning center, and two separate practice gyms. The upper level includes a shared reception area, office suites for each program, two conference rooms that look over onto the practice courts, and a spectator viewing area.

The material palette is inspired by the university colors and legacy. Large format tile floor creates a clean, crisp palette for branding and furniture. There are slight variations in selections between the men’s and women’s programs to create a unique identity and experience.
