MAP YOUR TOWN By The Genealogy Kids

Here's a fun and easy way to open young eyes to the history around them. Try creating a map of your town, and include the following items:

  • Your house
  • Your school
  • Main roads
  • Historic landmarks
  • The cemetery
  • Your relatives' houses (including the homes of ancestors, if you're so lucky as to live close by)

This activity is made easier with Google Maps, so pull up your town map online to use as a reference, and enjoy creating a map of the special place you live in.

We are blessed to live in a town that our ancestors settled, so we can add their homes to our map. And identifying old landmarks in town (such as the Lehi Roller Mills down the street from us) can help children to connect their own lives to the lives of people who lived here long ago.

Good luck, mapmakers!
