Big Data and Corpus Linguisitics Field Research for Eric's Secondary Area

Using Activity Theory and Actor Network Theory to Understand the Field

Activity Theory

"Activity networks are linked activity systems–human beings laboring cyclically to transform the object of their labor, drawing on tools and practices to do so. These activities themselves are the nodes, nodes that are constituted by, but transcend, the humans and nonhumans who participate in them" (Spinuzzi, 2008, p. 7).

Big Data @ Clemson

Applications

Big Data facilitates the collaboration with other scientific disciplines and industry to develop data-intensive and data-enabled applications

Operations

A significant part of working with Big Data is to understand how to deploy, monitor, and tune data-intensive systems

Architectures

An end-to-end Big Data platform is composed of a set of well-designed and well-integrated hardware and software components including storage systems, network interconnects, file systems, and analytical modules.

Alex Herzog, Professor of Practice

Actor Network Theory

"In actor–network theory, actor–networks are assemblages of humans and nonhumans; any person, artifact, practice, or assemblage of these is considered a node in the network and indeed can be an actor–network in itself" (Spinuzzi, 2008, p. 7).

Entities outside of Clemson

Who are they?

LAS is an immersive collaboration. Our goal of rapid innovation, prototyping, and evaluation can only be realized through close, ongoing collaborations between government, industry, and academics.

What do they do?

LAS brings the expertise of non-traditional participants to bear work on intelligence community problems. The challenges posed by “Big Data” are ubiquitous, and at LAS, academic and industry collaborators have an opportunity to bring their expertise to solve mission-relevant problems.

The Wednesday Research Meeting

LAS has established a forum we call the Wednesday Research Meeting (WRM). Once a week, the LAS comes together to hear from one of the LAS collaborators or potential collaborators. At these sessions, the speaker goes into detail about the work they are or could do for LAS. These sessions allow our collaborators to keep abreast of new developments in research areas tangential to their own.

Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers a Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) Program that provides awards to accredited universities for doctoral research that uses criminal justice data or statistical series and focuses on crime, violence, and other criminal justice-related topics.

Who are they?

NLP Logix is continuing to stay on the cutting edge of the latest technologies in Data Science with our internationally-recognized work in Computer Vision.

What do they do?

The field of data science draws on theories and techniques from many broad areas including, but not limited to, mathematics, statistics, computer science and machine learning. NLP Logix has successfully applied these techniques to extract knowledge, insights and relationships from data in various forms to solve a wide variety of commercial and governmental problems.

The result?

An innovative methodology to understanding the ethical role of technical documents in the American federal prison system.
